Medellin - Teaching English and/or Private English Tutor

Hey Poor But Happy-ers!

I'm here in Medellin working for a foundation for a few months and I would like an English teaching/tutoring job in the evenings and/or on the weekends. I have a working permit, experience working with children, community outreach, and new member organizational training, though not exactly teaching the English language. If any of you have ANYYYYY information whatsoever that could be helpful, I will be FOREVER grateful. The foundation I work for does not pay me a lot and I would like to be able to eat something besides arepa...

Thank you in advance!

Sydney

PS: If anyone knows of a CHEAP apartment or room in a house (I mean real cheap...like less that 300.000 pesos per month) thats close to Sabaneta but still within distance to the actual city please send that info my way. I currently work in San Jose but live in Laureles and it takes me at least an hour and a good amount of money to commute (I have to take a bus, then the metro, then another bus...and again on the way back...its adding up).

Thanks :)

We used to get less than one a month. Now it's like two a week. The problem is that this information is searchable here. No need to keep rehashing it.

Bottom line is with 13% unemployment in a country riddled with qualified workers living in poverty what are the chance that Colombia allows rich Europeans and Americans to just take jobs down here?

An American can't even go to Spain or Italy and get a job. A realestate firm in Colombia is going to hire a foreigner who can't speak Spanish and just give him a job because he wears a blazer when there are more qualified experienced Colombian professionals driving taxis?

If pigs fly and this ever happens are you willing to work for $300-$500 a month and live like Colombians live?

"NO penthouse for you!"

I, for one, don't see a problem with it to an extent. If a foreigner comes here, with an education, experience and a good heart, why not put him/her to work for the betterment of the situation? All cultures can benefit fro the influx of other cultures, whether it be through free-trade, legal immigration or cross-cultural interests (like in this case).

I immigrated to this country because I fell in love with the people and culture. I am not a Poblado expert, thank God, and stay away from the living-large mentality that so many bring. I work an honest job here, teaching future adults of Colombia in a private school (NOT an English teacher), and give of myself and my time to kids with less opportunity than most - even planning to open a local business in a poor sector that offers many free benefits to poor schoolchildren. I originally came down after landing a gig right here on PBH. So according to you, this is a bad thing that has happened?

Slamming a trend based on someone who is working for a foundation (probably giving of themselves to a good cause in this country for next-to-no pay)??? Damn guys...cut people a break

1. a few of you are being rude...thats just uncalled for.
2. i speak almost fluent spanish and i speak spanish the whole time in the foundation. i just want to find a teaching job to supplement some income because i have a skill (english and experience instructing people) that people here lack and want to improve upon.
3. im not asking for a penthouse. im literally asking for a whole in the wall that is relatively safe that is close to a metro station and/or bus stop.
4. this "searchable" information is pretty old, thats why i rephrasing it here. no need for the ´tude.
5. the rest of you, learn some damn patience and please stop assuming im some dumb american with a sense of entitlement. i know what im getting myself into thank you very much.
6. big texas, i will email you when im done with my meeting :) thanks for being kind and supportive.

Your probably much smarter and closer connected to Medellin. I've decided to keep posting and just intelligently respond to this regular BS, knowing I am the better person when it's all said and done. I would be happy to help you in any way I can....
