Medellin - are the sidewalks really torn up in the La 70 neighborhood near Estadio Metro Station?

I want to stay in a hotel in or near the La 70 neighborhood near the Estadio metro station, but I heard they are tearing up and replacing all the sidewalks in that area (apparently because of the upcoming S. American Games in March 2010). Can any of you confirm that? I can't believe the whole neighborhood is this way. I don't want to be in a construction zone during my stay. thanks!

They are torn up but walkable. I stayed a block from there this past weekend; not particularly unpleasant.

Very noisy during the daytime and they probably start work early in the mornings too. It will be great when it is finished but at the moment it is only about 50% done.

Yeah, it's a friggin mess there these days, what with construction work, and whack traffic that can't get by. Highly recommend avoiding the area.

they are actually getting work done pretty quickly, and the parts that are done look very nice for pedestrians. You do wonder though if the section between the stadium and San Juan is going to have perpetual traffic problems due to the reduced number of lanes and the absolute necessity of getting through on that road.

porque no te callas?

You guys are great! Not only answers, but *photos* ! Wow!
I thought I had found the perfect area to stay in, as several hotels are within walking distance of each other & were only 70.000, plus close to the metro station. I guess my search goes on. I will try to stay in this area next year after all the work is done. Thanks again for the local responses.

Maynard -- Why not stay in the Laureles neighborhood, right off La 70? It's quiet, walkable, safe/upscale and has many hotels significantly cheaper than Poblado. Many parts of Laureles are a 10-15 minute walk from the Estadio metro station;otherwise, there are plenty of buses & cabs.

Yes, Laureles is a decent area not too far from the 70 and you will not pay El Poblado prices.

I looked in the Laureles neighborhood, too, but I was attracted to La 70 because there were many hotels that were priced around 70.000. I figured I would go to one of the hotels to look at a room, and if I didn't like it, I could easily walk to others and check them out before paying. If you know of a street in Laureles that I should concentrate on (or a major intersection even better), please let me know. I will start investigating that area too. Thank you!
