Medelin is now infested with gringos :(

Sadly, my hometown has now been ruined by this gringo infestation. The beautiful, undiscovered gem of a city I so love is now a magnet for sexual tourists/mongers trying to score with prepagos or pick up girls in Mangos. It´s disgusting, frankly. LAst night, fully 50% of the patrons in Parque Lleras establishments were American/Canadian/Euro. On Saturday, Mangos and Trilogia each had no less than 15 male gringos on thr prowl, each.

I almost wish the city were violent again so that they´d stay away!

People IMMIGRATE to NY from around the world to make a life in the city.
These gringos in Medellin are here for sex, alone. They are not in any sense contributing to the culture of teh city, nor making it any more dynamic. They´re here to bed hot girls and leave. Apples and oranges, my friend.

Now you know how Americans feel as foreigners continue to "infest" our country.

Aint read the whole thread - but Tomtom I can't get behind this statement in a stand alone context:

"Who are the vast majority of the patrons at the brothels in Medellín? Hint: it isn't the Gringos."

Yes in a country with 43 million Colombians and 200K Gringo tourists/inhabitants it's easy to make your statement. Something to consider is the percentage of locals in the whorehouse vs the percentage of foreign whore mongers. I'd say 95% of the drooling gringos are here for the impovershed females looking to feed their kids and think that they are all that (not that there's anything wrong with that - both sides know what's up).

If 1 in 100 total prostitution customers are gringos and the rest are locals, both the views belonging to you and the OP can co exist.

Show me one gringo who has visited here and hasn't hit the whorehouse and I'll show you a homo, a backpacker with game, someone young who has not been to Costa Rica, or a mail order guy stopping in to check out the future internet wife's ass before popping the question.

it's not far off, leave that dirt bag of a hell hole, get outta town, drive up to llano grande and see, feel, breathe, taste what colombia is and can be if one seeks her out. dw

My girlfriend and I did spend our time there learning about the culture and going to local stores, bars and restaraunts (as well as museums and such)

As for the people from Medillin, they were very friendly, outgoing and welcoming by a vast majority.

We spent a good deal of time in Bogota, went to alot of cities and towns throughout Colombia and the people from Medellin did not seem any less civilized than other places.

There is prepagos everywhere you go, Personally I think jelsaad is out of line with the comments. So you want to get rid of turists in Medellin?. does not matter the purpose of the turists they help in many ways the economy of a city or country, if you don't want mongers in your city, make prepagos illegal and have them chased by the police, so you'll have more population in your jails and 1 less income in some homes.

Think!!!!! not every turist that goes to Medallo is looking for sex, there is a big majority of us that love that beautiful country and we keep going back to learn more of the wonderful Colombian people; like they're always happy and willing to help, something that you don't see very often in other countries.

I love Miami but visit MDE and other locales in the high South Florida season. I love Europe too but dollar es basura alla.

People bash Lleras yes but it is still a secure location. Extranjeros and Colombianos alike enjoy it there for its' security and variety of dining and drinking establishments. I myself tryed to get an apartment away from it to experience another dimension but logistics and safety dictated closer which is ok this trip since purpose of my trip is to get to know more of MDE outside Poblado and hopefully relaible honest contacts and prices for future accomodation outside it.

Yes many of us would like to see more traditional barrios and the life but not when alone and when we first get here. Actually, I think it's more like skipping the test altogether and just having fun instead.

People love to use logic like that to disparage prostitution, but would anyone suggest that paying for dinner is sad ? Would anyone suggest that going to a fine restaraunt and dropping $ 150 for dinner is somehow less fulfilling than staying at home and making it yourself... just so that you can feel that you "earned" it ?

My last night in Rio a few years ago was awesome, I went to a Sauna and met one of the most gorgeous women I've ever seen. She had just gotten to work, but I talked to the manager ($$$) and told him that I wanted to take her out of the place. I took her out to dinner and she showed me some cool places in Rio and she stayed with me until morning. The whole evening cost me over $ 500, but I don't regret a penny of it.

My only regrets are that I didn't get a picture of her and that I never saw her again.

Perhaps, but the money means nothing to me... anymore than paying for a movie diminishes the fun I have watching it.

I learned a long time ago that sex is not love and love is not sex. I only think it's sad if a guy loses the capacity to look at women as other than sex-objects or when a girl loses the capacity to see men as other than money-objects. But, hey this is the real world, shit happens... or as Morrison put it "no-one here gets out alive"

When I lived in Medellín (2003-2005) I went to Mangos a couple of times and caught the vibe of the place which is meat market and nothing more. It's an overdone, tackily designed, expensive and sleazy pickup joint. I got sick on aguardiente both times I was there since I was so bored I had no choice but to get drunk. The music mix switches songs every 30 seconds and it feels like some tropical-themed bar at Disney World. Why anyone would go there to experience the true Medellín is beyond me. It'd be like going to New York City and hanging out on 42nd Street and thinking you're experiencing the real thing. But, if it keeps all of the sleazoid sex tourists in one place, great. That leaves the rest of the city for those that want to taste the real thing, and there's plenty of it. Try Parque Periodista and its surrounding bars if you are the backpacker/hippie type. There are plenty of areas you can go and experience the true Medellín, just be cool and not a fool and everything shoud be fine.

I have been living in Medellín for over a year now. I rarely go to Poblado and only went to Mangos once. There is a Gringo living in my apartment building, but I rarely see him. I do see 3 other Gringos in my Spanish class if 2 Englishmen and an Aussie count as Gringos. I really don't see any others.

hahaha!

tomtom33, there isn't an infestation!!

In fact, the most gringos I ever saw at once in Medellin were in the Oviedo Casino (the bigger one, the smaller one where I X 60ed my money there were none). In the big casino, I sat at a gringo blackjack table. They were the first gringos I had seen in awhile.

I was sitting there playing, cussing in spanish (paisa) everytime i got a bad hand, and they were being loud and sorta obnoxious and ignored me because they thought I couldn't understand them, trying to speak token spanish to me every once in awhile. They were just stopping over in medellin only because they were going to San Andres, from what I remember.

They all thought I was a local, until they asked my ID after about 30 minutes. They all looked at me astonished as I told the security guard my name, and they said "hell, you're american? Why the hell didn't you tell us???". The truth is, it was a novelty to be treated like a local, those gringos didn't know otherwise :)

I was 35 when I first visited Colombia. I wasn't backpacking. I never visited a whorehouse. I am not gay. I didn't meet my now wife over the Internet either.

I now know all about Whiskerias. When I originally visited Colombia - I never even heard of that term - nor did I have any knowledge of the existance of whorehouses in Colombia. I have never been in a Whiskeria in Colombia (or anywhere). At least so far in my life, I have never had the desire nor the need to go.

"I now know all about Whiskerias"... that's like saying that you know all about bars when you've never had a drink.

People assume whorehouses are all about sex, and there is of course, truth to that, but they are also similar to bars, casinos, churches, museums, ect. in the sense that some people just enjoy passing time there.

Not so much in South America, but in Eastern Europe (Prague, Budapest, Moscow), there were particular clubs that I used to really enjoy hanging out in... drinking beer, listening to music, people-watching and talking to the girls (as well as the obvious). Rio as well, can be fun in some of their Spas (Thermas). Unfortunately, nothing like this exists in the States, except maybe Vegas. There are, of course, whorehouses in Colombia, but except for one or two in Cartegena, none that I have seen are much more than dives... but even a dive can be fun occasionally.

What most people seem to forget is that prostitutes are women first and are not all the same.
Some are "hardened whores", others are as nice as any girl you'll ever meet... most just consider it a job. As I mentioned, I fell hard for one, but there were a couple of others that I enjoyed dating and even when I'd see them at work, we would have fun just hanging out... as long as she wasn't too "busy".

I don't know if it's good or bad, but one of the interesting things about dating a prostitute is that you never have to wonder if she's sleeping with other guys... you KNOW she is. If you can deal with that, it makes you a little less possesive / jealous generally... which does seem to be a good thing.

Nar, not always. It's erroneous to assume all long-distance relationships involve as one friend put it to me, well, damn, I forget the term he used, but it was amusing, but not all involve 'cheating'. \

"Una relacion de lejos es de pendejos" wasn't the expression, but I agree with that statement not because of the partner cheating (which I have never experienced), but generally because you deprive yourself of any romantic or physical human contact, necessary, natural, etc..., so unless it's open during the long-distance part of it, then it's all a bit daft. That was my experience. I tried to make it open, no dice, so it was over.
