ME ROBARON! PLEASE HELP

I did send a letter to my sister with personal information, she never got the letter but problems.

They openned the letter and they are using my personal bank ifnormation and took a 1000 bucks out from my account here in USA.
I went to USPS and they said cannot help me.
Does any one knows who or which company received the regular mail sent out from USA to Bogota?

The police cannot help either because they need to know who did received the document in Bogota?

Please help

go to your bank and explain the situation Also I believe you should file a report with the FBI, which you can do at their website. The banks insurance may cover it if you get the police reports ASAP and put a freeze on the account.

What type of mail did you use? USPS or UPS? If you used UPS you can track your letter online and see what day it arrived and was delivered. If you used USPS, then I doubt someone can respond. USPS is received my ADPOSTAL here in colombian, wich is very slow and some packages get lost.
FEDEX is also a reliable way to send stuff to colombia.

Houston, We've Got a Problem! This nonsense needs to stop!! I cannot believe they are still doing this, stealing from letter and packages, etc.
A complaint needs to be filed with the Inspector General at the Post Office in Colombia or with whoever is running the Postal Office in Bogotá. People at the top need to know about this ongoing postal crime, also file a complaint with the DAS and file a complaint with FBI.

Notify the Police in your city, county, or state, or the FBI.. you just need a police case number for the credit card company only. Be aware that none of them, i repeat none of them will actively investigate it, because 99% of the time the banking institution will reimburse the money, which in California, makes the banking institution the victim as they now are down the money, and they can write the loss off. Notify all banking institutions immediately to cancel/freeze/close any financial accounts. Have them send you new account information, and ATM cards etc. Notify Social Security as well, if applicable. An investigation into this common crime is labor-intensive and very difficult to solve and prosecute.

Then, if it is US credit/banks that you use, go to www.annualcreditreporting.com and register to receive annual credit reports from the 3 major credit reporting agencies in the US...you are entitled to receive a free yearly report from each agency. Through this site you can arrange for each of the credit agencies to send you a copy at intervals: such as agency #1 sends you a report in january, #2 May, and #3 in September...You need to monitor your credit report quite closely for a year or two. What you need to look for is new credit cards being issued and opened in your name by the bad guys. They open an account in your name, spend to the limit, and then open another one, and you get "credit" for the spending. Loans as well. Immediately report that as well. What happens is when the initial group is finished with it, they will sell it once they do their dirty deeds.

Achichombiada... i feel sorry for you 'cause in colombia is hard to find out things like that, but if you go with the company you sent the letter with, they will tell you which mail service in colombia the work with or at least they trace that letter for you.....

The major problem is there are many "suspects" between a mail box in the US and delivery to a foreign address. I used to send small US bills to children i have more or less adopted in Colombia and the christmas cards arrive, but no money. So they know that "Christmas" is when i arrive and i give them their presents in person....the looks on their faces tells me what it is all about.

but anyway, all the postal employees know it occurs, nothing new there, and the post office, fbi, cia, etc, dont have the concern or the manpower to investigate....Its not a matter of rounding up the "usual suspects"....you are better to use Fedex for documents, and they are much faster too, where as the USPS takes forever. I sent a small package to Cartagena on Feb 17, and it arrived yesterday!....

And, rule #1.....nothing personal goes via email or postal...too risky....trust noone as they say!

Shirly, doing the investigation your self really wont get your credit history or money back...put pressure on the banking institution to reimburse the unauthorized withdrawal or payments. you will find that nobody knows anything about the letter...and usually, the letter thief just sells the info, doesnt actually do the internet fraud stuff, because their job is still secure if they get rid of possession of the mail.

In the United States it's a felony crime!
Felony crimes are serious offenses punishable by a heavy sentence. The punishment is usually imprisonment, but in certain murder cases, the punishment could be death.

One last thing as my incompetent boss is bugging me..(he is... reading this as i write it ! damn! caught again!!!) regular letters do not have tracking mechanisms....you have to pay for that service (ie certified, registered, etc) and even then it will show what city it was last tracked to ...i dont believe Colombia has the hardware for that,,,,they manually track thing....which require signatures.

Monpirri1...i admire your enthusiasm, but it is such a common crime and unless someone turns themselve in, holding a bag of incriminating evidence, just will not be investigated, depending on the dollar loss of course...(if you name is bill gates and the loss is umteen million, for example)....also, it is a question of which agency has jurisdiction to investigate and prosecute. Podunk PD in Utah for example will not spend big $$ to send an investigator to Colombia to investigate..felony (under some circumstances, yes) but rarely investigated. Sad but true, but normally the bank winds up losing the $$, so its not so bad for the non-Gates....

Achichombiada Don't take it as another unfortunately incident, make a BIG DEAL out of it because this type of activity has been going on for several years and nothing has been done about it.
I say, go all of way to the top and make copies of all your complaints cc to both agencies, and contact the local press, and I bet, your case will be investigated!

Miguel_Clavo, good advises.

I like Kentucky - check out the horse farms, Kat. Nothing like a good looking young mare, hehehe. Although I guess you'd be more interested in the stallions.

achichombiada-Sorry about your Problem Sounds like you got some good advice to follow through on. One more Caveat-ADVOID using Avianca Air Express. I used them out of Miami a few years ago(they are located right next to the ServiEntrega Office) off NW 25 th St.) I slipped in some money on a Shipment to Bogota and sure enough someone in Avianca swiped it. The Box was sealed in front of me in Servientrega's office but was broken(seal) when my party went to pick it up in the North Bogota office. Thankfully it was a small amount under $20USD but it was the principle-they STOLE something that wasn't theirs! Beware of this shipping medium and company. If they swiped a small item like the $20, can you imagine what could happen to your Luggage?? And they have countless complaints both in the Miami Avianca Office as well as the Bogota Office. The Complaints are seldom resolved in the Customer's favor.:(

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.
