McDonald's failure in Colombia

In this week's Semana magazine there's an article about McDonald's. Apparently the fast food company has been losing money since it started its operations in Colombia. The article also says that most of the latin american operations are losing money and the headquarters are considering to sell the whole latin american operations to a mexican franchisee.
The article also says that McDonald's has troubles competing with them. Other fast foods have had trouble in Colombia, Wendy's and Burger King closed their operations in Colombia, KFC and Baskins & Robbins barely survive. Meanwhile the colombian competitors keep growing and they mention El Corral, personally my favorite burger in Colombia.

Any thoughts?

McDonalds
Frankly, I'm glad to see them fail, and for several reasons. Not the least of which is I hate traveling 1000 miles to find the same tasteless homogonized food, the same franchises you would see down the street from your house.

My wife says that they are too expensive, and only the "rich" Colombians eat there. But really, why go to McDonalds when there is a place selling good food at a similar price next door?

Besides colombian food I rather mexican or arabian food. Burgers are not on my list. I do rather small restaurants, vegetarians would do.

For high scale restaurant I would pick Crepes & Waffles

They should get credit however, Mickey D's, however, should get credit for daring to introduce the Drive Thru Window to Colombia. I don't think I've ever seen someone actually use it, but the McDonalds at Parque de las 93 in Bogota has one.

Colombia has no competition in gastronomy Again, I Colombia has no competition in culinary with any other country in North America, Central America and South America.
I wish I knew one 100% Colombian cook to help display all the regional dishes that Colombia has. By the way, I am not smoking anything!!

monpirri... it's time for you to leave; You have lost your sense of reality and tastebuds, too. I will suggest you return to New Orleans, and stop by Cajun Country on the way, because there you will find a 1000 culinary delights that will tickle your tastebuds and give you "Food for Thought".

How long has it been since you been to the homeland?
I have to agree with some other here, that in general, Colombian food is bland.
I have however had some very good food while in Colombia.

It's time for you to leave, and check out those Argentina Restaurants and Beef, that some of the others were telling you about.
But, I am certain there are restaurants in Houston that can also equal what they are recommending. But, I will wait for your report, however bland it may be.

Hamburguesas Del Oeste is the best! ok I own a franchise so I´m biased but you cannot beat the value and it is a damn good burger...in la 80 in Medellin we offer Table service, sports bar with 2 big screens and lots of sports packages via internet that you cannot get anywhere else in Medellin and always without cover, free internet, table games, playground, movies, karaoke in spanish & English, Playstation 2, prices about 2/3 of what El Corral charges, a hell of a nice owner to talk to and get advice from and for the guys who already know can attest to...the view of Palacio de las uñas next door is worth the cab ride over from poblado.

Oh! no. I can see it now: that old MF, Gringodiego, at H.D.O. doin' the karaoke en espanol to Maia's 'Aguacero', and attracting a crowd of sympathetic Colombians con mucho risa.

MacRepas... I think would have to be called. They would confuse 'MacArepas' with the Macarena. But, maybe not; maybe only us gringo locos. But if they can associate the eating with the dancing, then maybe it takes off.
McDonald's with dancefloors. lol. Only in Colombia!

Really, I am with all of you who delight in the demise of McD's in Colombia. But, you know how it is; someone's going to figure a way to make it go. Or, at least they will probably have some fun and/or die trying.

It's Scottish cuisine....well, more like a 'dare' than cuisine!
It's the heart, liver and lungs of a sheep, minced, then mixed with oatmeal and seasonings, then boiled for 3 hours inside a bag made from the sheeps stomach lining.
