Maybe I look Like a Bum

Hey: is anyone else having trouble getting into nightclubs in Bogota. Recently I have been told ''members only'' jaja ie : read - 'You are not cool enough for the line'' at the following clubs:

Socorro,

The new disco (cant remember name on about 76 with 15).

Gotica (about 50% of the time),

El Sitio (managed to weedle my way in after saying my nonexistant GF was there)

Before at Guarana,

Once at Dancatoria,

Once they even tried it at Kukamakara.

Is this just because I go alone (no mates) or because I look like a bum with a bad hairstyle or do others have this problem. Have never had the problem in Cali, Medellin, Baranquilla etc - Just Bogota. The whole situation sucks - I want Mr Babillas back!!

bickerss, i was just kidding....are you an obvious gringo? are they letting colombians in at the same time? do you speak spanish to understand why they are not letting you in?..i know in some clubs in BAQ i could not get in on Friday nights only...saturdays were no problem.....then i found out that you had to call in on fridays and reserve a table and tell them how many people would be in your party......not saying that is happening here, but all the clubs in parts of LA maintain a "selective" guest list......

For Socorro I was with a nice lady friend. Never had trouble in any other city, incl Baranquilla (best nightlife in that town by the way, La Quinta - closed now - and Frogless rock). Conchale Vale!! says on Jul 15, 2007, 11:31:

I think there is couple reasons here. First as GIB commented it does has to do with maintaining a hip image. But also I believe it has to do with maintaining a base of similar clients. For example i would believe bamapits has had few problems getting into clubs in south beach...why he is 21 and fits the scene. Unfortunately I am getting to damn old to fit in everywhere!! But I do believe you should be able to go where ever you please. I don't know all of those clubs however if I recall Gotica is a electro/techno type club. The average age 20-30 if your over 40 pushing 50 you'll look like a college kid in a day care. Also going to a disco alone is a rare thing anywhere I went in Latin America. Everyone goes in groups..it looks strange to be in a disco without amigos or amigas and leaves the question why. If you go to more of a bar type environment then solo is better and age is less important. Mind you i am not saying anyone is old here just my 2 cents

Bogota policy -- even in more down to earth places, I have noticed a policy not to let in lone guys once it gets late. The doorman figures the guy is probably drunk and is just going to immediately pester the girls and cause trouble. Mixed groups are better cause they get a table, buy a bottle and socailise within their group.

My advice: go as part of a mixed group, arrive early, dress nicely and you should be fine.

Have not seen any in Maria Mulata zoan rosa, the 80s bar down from coconuts, sand in 93, the disco near macas in 93 - plenty of places that are free of extranjeros. Also, sometimes it is nice to speak to people from your own country culture - whats wrong with that; sometimes its just great to be able to speak your own language, about things that are common without having to speak slow or explain yourself - especially when u never live in your own country.

I have limited experience going to clubs in Colombia. However, I have had allot of experience going to clubs in the past in Canada. I would always have "payolla money (sp). Often I would go to the front of line and shake the bouncer's hand. I would of course have a twenty dollar bill or more in my hand at the same time. It worked every time. Bounces/doormen do not get allot of money for what they do and greasing their palm does help and is a common preactice. They see a gringo and think...hmmm maybe he has a little extra for me. I have never failed with my tactic....never! I guess it is all up to you whether or not you will pay extra for preferential treatment. I remember one time there was a line up two blocks long for a club. I greased the bouncer's palm and he had a guy take me through their kitchen to get to the venue. Hell if police take kickbacks don't you think these doormen will? Loosen up Bickers and spend some of your wealth lol.

Bickers there is no way you were refused because of the way you dress. I know you and you do not dress like a bum. You were not refused because you were drunk. I know you can drink my friend and still hold your own. In my humble opinion, the doorman wanted a little gratuity from you. Forget the list thing....just grease their palms lol.

Morphus is dead, balls on, right when he says in Medellin you are treated like royalty one minute and a fly the next. This is largely true of Colombia too. Some of the fly treatment is jealousy, some of it is ignorance, some of it is jingoism, some of it is the assumption that all tourists are ignorant about what the real Colombia is like. I still am -- I've always had enough to eat. I have posted a lot on this board and I hope some of my genuine love for Colombia shines through. But Colombia is a very schizophrenic sort of country -- divided, inconsistent, manic-depressive, live for the moment... and this is its greatest asset and greatest weakness.

I'm way past discos but still like places like el sitio and kukuramakara, which have live vallenato.

Years ago I was in London and went to the Hippodrome, which was the place to be at the time. Huge lineup in front. No one getting in. I'm not usually one to bother but I was on my own and so walked up to the doorman and started to explain that I was a tourist, just visiting for a short time, before I said more than 'I'm visiting from Canada' he had hoisted up the velvet rope and waved me through, told me I didn't have to pay the cover.

So I tried the same thing again at other hotspots (uhh what was that other one? Peter Stringfellows ?) and same thing, waved past the crowds of much hipper people (but I had to pay the cover).

I think it must be a deliberate policy to let in the odd tourist so they spread the word of the great clubs back home or something? I never did figure out why it worked.

I tried it in NYC and had some suceess there too, especially phoning ahead for reservations for the latest hot restaurant (Balthazar, Tribeca Grill, Montrachet, this was eons ago) that were supposedly booked full for months in advance. Call a few days before the weekend even. Soon as you say you are flying in from wherever, you get a table.

And if all else fails, the $20 (probably $50 now?) hidden in your palm exactly as lostgringo described (never make it obvious, puts the doorman in a bad spot, and doing it discretely seems to say you know what's what) never fails.
