MATARON A RAUL REYES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure that, in the context of today, it is good news.
Reyes was the "negotiator" of FARC.
After the unilateral release of the 4 hostages, we could think that talks could take place.
I understand why Uribe had no opinion about the Chavez proposal: I think he was informed and prepared the assault against Reyes.
Why does he refuse any negotiated solution ?
I think that the political future of Uribe is linked to the FARC.
If the "war" continues, Uribe will be reelected without problem.
If there is peace, the Colombians will examine the inflation, the unemployment, the closing of exporting companies, the developemnt of powerty and Uribe has very little hope of being reelected as his economic and social balance is a true catastroph.

buggy: "Rául Reyes" served as one of the negotiators during the Caguán talks, but he also had political and military responsibilities as a commander and member of the Secretariat, with troops under his command.

He wasn't exactly a man dedicated entirely to peace, nor was he an easy man to deal with during negotiations. In fact, apparently he was quite the hardliner, at least in certain subjects.

So it's not like his death would have prevented peace, which isn't exactly around the corner anyways.

While the death of human beings isn't exactly a cause for celebration, the war is the war. FARC has never stopped its attacks and there is no cease-fire in place.

For a long time, some people have criticized the Colombian government for not attacking the highest leaders of FARC and thus not producing enough results, so in a way those critics have received a reply. You can't have it both ways.

I wish for a political solution to the conflict, but that cannot happen until both parties decide to talk. At this time, we are not in a time of talks, and even during the Caguán process the war continued without any big changes. There was, again, no real cease-fire, so there is no reason for military operations to end, just as FARC has not stopped its activities.

That said, I am also worried about how FARC will react. But if they do something barbaric, the responsibility will be theirs alone.

If they can't even agree to sit down and resolve the hostage crisis, peace is definitely going to be far away, even if Mr. Reyes was still in this world.

That said, in a certain way, the horrors of war can increase popular rejection of it, as well as dissent within the affected groups. Wars have beginnings and endings, after all.

This will hurt the FARC's morale in a big way.

Is it fair to assume that most FARC units carry radios and will hear the news immediately?

Surely they would feel vulnerable, in the context of the recent FARC demobilisations. They may suspect that those retiring FARC members gave intel to the army. Or that the army is succeeding better in infiltrating the organisation?

They must be thinking:
- perhaps the demobilising guys gave away info on our position, too?
- we are going to be more poorly managed now, can I still believe in our leadership?
- God is not on our side
- maybe it's time to think about coming in from the jungle, too?

Pedro, I don't think they will think about God. They're supposed to be marxist. As a military organization, albeit badly managed and disjointed, they are probably prepared for war casualties. I agree with juance; the taking out of Raul Reyes may not prove to be such a decisively important thing. I also believe that Reyes was one of the hardliners and as a negotiator; not a loss for FARC. This may or may not have effect on the treatment of the prisoners; right now we can only wait and see.

I also think that the timing was not good regarding the process of liberation of the hostages. That will most probably stop now and further people will not be getting out.

Desi: They're officially Marxist and atheist, but I suppose some of them, especially the common fighters, will still practice religion on a personal level, even if they can't show it publicly due to ideological orthodoxy.

MT: FARC can name someone else to fill that position easily enough. However, a replacement will be a different person, with other virtues and flaws, which may or may not be able to immediately compensate for the automatic shock in terms of organization, experience, knowledge and morale, even if they are mentally prepared for such results. It's not a quantifiable loss, but it's not exactly without consequences either. If "Reyes" had information, money, projects or contacts he had not properly or fully reported to the rest of the Secretariat, for example, it would take time to set things straight.

bamacellist says on Mar 1, 2008, 10:09:

It's El Polo that represents the legitimate Colombian left-of-the-center. I think weakening of the FARC is a good thing but it's against my nature to celebrate death. Perhaps the time for negotiations will come soon; my priority lies on the individual level here, for getting home the kidnapped people, for saving innocent lives; what happens after that may well be war with casualties, but at least it's "clean" in a sense that parties involved are prepared to pay the price. I do not wish for a Marxist takeover in Colombia or anywhere; but it's alternative that most Colombians seem to want is the neoliberal, globalized, US-friendly/dependant economy would not be my choice for Colombia either.

I'm relieved too and I share your view on capital punishment. No, he didn't deserve better and he was prepared to die, I'm sure for that. I'm no FARC expert, far from it, but what I've read about them is that they consider themselves as an insurgency and at war against the legitimate government of Colombia which makes his death not a murder, not an asassination but a war casualty. These guys are ruthless and there are many deaths on their conscience, if they have one, or if they believe that it's just "collateral damage" when innocent civilians die and suffer.

Hiltler's death cannot be compared with this incident, not directly, but I believe most people were relieved when the war was finally brought to an end in Europe and none were more relieved than some of his closest staff members. Raul Reyes is "small potatoes" compared to that but my choice would have been him would have been brought to justice, tried by a court of law and sent to jail for the rest of his life with no parole.

His camp was apparently on Ecuador's side of the border and capture would have required, at the very least, to land troops on that side of the border and hope he doesn't run away and hide in the meanwhile, protected by his guards.

preferaly to aprehend him than to kill him, regardles of his whereabouts

The way I see it, the did him a favor, (maybe a few others). Who knows if he left any writings somewhere.

If Noriega was taken alive why not Raúl Reyes?

If the guy from Sendero Luminoso was taken alive why not Raúl Reyes?

But, I'm going to start making some assumptions here.... Which means I might actually end up making an ass out of myself ..........Thu 04 17, 2008 11:34 am

podborski, is Uribe good or evil? Bush? Lenin? Marx? Castro?(etc. etc.)
easy for the ignorant I think

There were over two hundred citizen responses to the news in El Pais and 99.9% were overjoyed and the majority credit Uribe for the successfull attack. One example pretty well sums it it up:

"carlos Alarcon / cali,

Mientras Pastrana lo abrazó Uribe lo mató"

Minister of Defense Santos stated that "a human source" supplied the location of Reyes. The location of "El Negro Acasio" was also supplied by a human source. What has happened is that military intelligence with impetus from Uribe has improved a hundred fold and the FARC are fast losing their hiding places.

If the source was civilian I expect he will recieve an impressive recompense. I wouldn´t be surprised if the FARC have to begin spending their ill gotten gains paying big protection money like super-narcos such as Chupeta.

it is easy, but not for the ignorant.

tell me what actions a person has taken, and I'll tell you if they are good or evil. Judges do it all the time.

Marx, Lenin, Castro all easy. Bush, my mind is not made up, I used to think just stupid and incompetent. But maybe one day when we know more about what really happened I will downgrade him.

I know next to nothing about Uribe, I'm not fit to judge.

With all the excitement, there's not much word on the capture of the guy that replaced Martin Caballero, but this was a really big capture as well. With all the hostage releases and captures/deaths of FARC lately this could be a turning point for Colombia. Amazing.

I will buck the trend and say that I think that Bush is neither incompetent nor stupid. If he were truly either, he never would have served nearly two terms as US President. He can only be adequately judged by historians at least 25 years down the road.

Were some stupid and incompetent moves made during Bush's tenure? Hell yes. Can you name any President(or any human for that matter) free from error?

Every single decision made by Bush was made in concert with some of the best minds available. And there is no decision that everyone will agree with. I don't agree with many of the decisions that I have made in the past. Hindsight....

It was only one guy, and albeit not one of the major military strategists liek Mono Jojoy, but it is a huge golpe psicológico, since one of the tenets of the FARC and their water carriers has been that if the Colombian armed forces were so good, how come they couldn't touch El Secretariado. Well not only did they touch it, but they touched el numero uno. How many lower level commanders that were sitting on the fence about whether to give it up, have now just had their minds made up for them. You will see the stream of defectors growing into a river. Also a little known fact is that one of the biggest crisis the FARC is currently suffering is the that so many mandos medios and caleteros are deserting and taking the FARC's drug money with them. Another good and somehwat overlooked aspect of today's great accomplishment is the fact that the Ecuadorian governament and pres Correa in particular, not only gave Uribe el visto bueno, but also offered all neccessary cooperation, and even deployed Ecuadorian troops to prevent Reyes and his men from escaping.

Juance, as always you are right. So what happened in the meantime?? Did little Hugo call him and threaten to end all subsidies to Ecuador if he (Correa) didn't change his tune? Either way, fok both of them and viva Colombia. Like MT says, we are living in interesting times.

tomtom I hear ya, but I just think the evidence is overwhelming that Bush couldn't make a good decision if his life depended on it.

MAYBE we'll find out years from now there were reasons for his decision to invade Iraq (for one example only) that made sense, but I doubt it.

It's not only Iraq, he's been a total disaster economically too. He'll get out just before the shit hits the fan and then blame it on the next admin, like the dishonest, irresponsible little man he is.
