Married Colombian here in U.S. and want to re-wed in Colombia

I've been married to my wife for the last four years and soon we will be moving to Colombia where I plan to retire. After reading all the posts regarding visas and immigration, it seems that the easiest route would just be to go to Colombia and get married again and then apply for a resident visa. With the resident visa I can open banking accounts, buy property, etc.

Is my idea as easy as it sounds or am I missing something? Your help is appreciated.

I'm missing something. You are ALREADY married. Why do you need to get married again?

Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult.

I think two are better than one. With 2 Colombian wives you have a better shot at getting the residency! Or they will let you stay for twice the normal (6 months times 2 = full year) that definitely works! Ja ja ja

Unfortunately.. you just can't apply for a residency visa. Your best bet would be to obtain a TC(spouse) visa at a Colombian consulate-not much of a problem. That is good for two years and can be renewed. Normally it takes five years in country to apply for residency but the spouse visa cut the wait to two years before you can apply. If your Spanish is up to it go to MRE's (Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores) web site at: http://www.minrelext.gov.co/.

Yes, and a correction(sorry 'bout that) Incorrect: "Normally it takes five years in country to apply for residency but the spouse visa cut the wait to two years before you can apply."
The wait is cut to THREE years years NOT two years.

Yes BUT it is best to declare that intention when you apply for the spouse visa. That rule is as follows

"In the event that the foreigner wants to exercise a different activity than staying at home or study, he/she must present the original documents which prove the enrollment in the specific activity, as for example, if the intention is to work: Original of the Colombian Ministry of Work's Certificate indicating company's current proportionality between national and foreign workers for the position hired according to what is established by the Substantive Work Code. Not applicable when applied by cultural groups, or public events such as athletic or artistic ones. This request is not required when the entity employer is an organ, entity, or institution of the Government."

This last may well apply to a public university/school/language program. BTW You have EXCELLENT credentials to land a good job in you field in Colombia especially the ESL.

The TC is the quickest way to residency then you have no worry about renewing-the residency is a "permanent"state. I would make an appointment with one of the consulates in the USA and have a sit down to discuss your situation.
