marriage in colombia

Where can you find info in Bogota about what documents are needed to marry in Colombia? Do I visit a notaria?? Anyone have any idea where I can find out more?

You can find out much much more... Using that little search box in the upper right hand corner..

Since your already in Bogota and I believe it is better to get the info directly from the person doing the marriage, just go to a notaria, some in Bogota have a handout of exactly what is required for a foreigner to marry a Colombian and remember some are better than others in dealing with this so look around, there are many notories here.

A ngelitabogota-bad advice because that law, Ley 915 del 21 de Octubre del 2004, went to the Constitutional Court and it ruled in late October 2008 the special regulation of marriages in San Andres was not consistent with the Act 915 of 2004 on the Economic and Social Development department in force in the rest of Colombia and are NOT VALID.

The Constitutional Court ruled the special regulation of marriages in the archipelago of San Andres were not consistent with the Act 915 of 2004 on the Economic and Social Development department. The same mariage requirements in force in Colombia now apply to San Andres.

Here goes and I will assume you are from the USA, but the documents you will need will be the same even if you are not...first no document can be over 90 days old.....you will need a new issued birth certificate, with a notary stamp and a aspostille (this you get in most of the USA states from the Secretary of State).....you need a document saying you are not currently married -- this document does not exist in the USA....so have your lawyer write a letter saying they have researched and can say you are not currently married in the state you live in....this letter must have a notary stamp and an aspostille...again....these documents cannot be over 90 days old on the date you get married in Colombia...once your in Colombia....you must get these documents translated....this will take 1 to 3 days...usually....and must be done by a legally recognized translation service...now you are ready to go to a notary - but make sure your Colombian Fiance has their needed documents also -- if your documents are in order -- and they should be if you have done everything listed before -- you can get a date for a ceremony......also....unless your Spanish is near perfect, you must hire a translator, also who is legally recognized...again...nothing can be over 90 days dated on your wedding day.....you can get married in Colombia if you are not a citizen, but you must have the proper documents....there are no short-cuts....good luck!!

I didn't know hardly any Spanish. I just looked interested and responded to the appropiate visual clues. They got a hugh laugh out of my trying to put the ring on her left (the wrong hand in Colombia) hand instead of the right hand.

apeters...yup and I have the wedding video to prove it. All her family got a tremendous kick out of that it as they thought I was too nervous to get the correct hand. All in all it was quite an adventure. It started out badly, I nearly missed my own wedding thanks to Continental and Copa Airlines taking three days to get me from Houston to Medellin.

Then the notaria really didn't care for me pointing out numerous mistakes on my wedding documents even though I couldn't speak Spanish. One of the errors was the wedding date. The notaria had the wrong date and was double booked for the time slot of our wedding.

As a part of our official wedding ceremony we got about a five minute lecture on respecting the time of public servants. My bride did take about thirty extra minutes getting ready.

I was wearing contacts for the first time (improved distance but not reading) and couldn't even see the documents I was supposed to sign. My wife had to guide my hand to the correct spot. This provided more laughs for her family.

The photographer videographers that I paid all of $200.00 for would not go away. I finally announced that I was going to consumate my marriage if they cared to video that come along.

So yes, I am very sure of the right hand tradition for wedding rings for Paisas in the Medellin area.

On the other hand I have heard that it is not practiced universally in Colombia.
