My wife knows a Colombiana who came to the US years ago on a tourist visa and has been illegal ever since. Guess what she did to get legal? Got married. It's one of the few ways out for illegals.

That isn't quite true. It has been done the other way, I assure you. Most spouses who immigrate to the United States do not use either the K-1 or the K-3. They enter the US on another type of visa and marry while in the United States and then adjust their status to permanent resident. In fact, using the USCIS own reports, one can see that K visas constitute less than 10% of all the spouses of US citizens who annually immigrate to the US. Contact an experienced immigration attorney for further help.
