Marriage adventure status

Well... I was finally able to go to Bogota to visit my girlfriend for a little while. I've been trying to find out about getting married on an Official Visa. I was told by quite a few people that it has been done before and that it wouldn't be a problem but I was still unsure. I still got all the documents I needed. My girlfriend and I went to about 3 different Notaries. The first one said that the Singleness Certificate was good, I needed only the Marriage VISA and the Birth Certificate was bad. With the Birth Certificate, I was told it was bad because of 1: the guy said the Apostille was for the translation and not the certificate itself. and 2: because I was born in Germany I needed a German Birth Certificate. I tried explaining to him that I was born on a US military base in Germany and because of that, I am only an American and no German Birth Certificate exists for me and All I have is the Certificate from the State Dept. "Report of Birth Abroad".

The Second Notary we went to heard about a marriage involving an Extranjero and said sorry we don't do that.

The Third one we went to said that the papers were good. but I needed a Visa for Marriage or Student.

The one thing that the first and third both asked was if my girlfriend has any children. She said she has a daughter. They told her that they would need some document from her stating that she has a residence in her name. She doesn't have anything has she lives in a house that one of her cousins own.

Anyone hear about needing documentation of one own residence because of Children?

Anyway. She has the papers so she can try calling other people but I'm starting to think that it's not going to go too well at this time. The rest of the time, we went on a couple of outings with her daughter. One of the outings was to a park "Jaime Duque" up toward Chía. not too bad, kind of quite too. I finally was able to go up to Monsoratte, the church on the mountain. Just wish I had my camera on that trip. We also went to buy Wedding rings and she goes to pick them up on the 16th.

Right now, I'm thinking that I'm going to have to wait until my trip is over (work wise) and go ahead and redo everything and get the Visa and go from there. So far it seems to be a little bit closer to being done.

Waiting period? Dan, did any of the three notarys mention that there would be a waiting period after filing your documents before you could get married? Thanks!

better to get a fiance visa. One of the guys I work with got married over 2 years ago in Colombia. He is still waiting for INS to grant a visa for his wife. It's much faster to get a fiance visa.

I don't remember if they said anything about waiting period, but it has been mentioned on this site as being 5 days. I do remember also one of them asked me if I spoke Spanish perfectly and because I don't understand it completely that an officil translator would be needed.

Brian, do you know if that guy only filed for the spouse visa or did he also file for the fiance visa too as part of the K3 process? I've been hearing that it can take 4-6 months with the K3 route.

The guy who has been waiting over two years for his wife is either not a US citizen or there is some other issue involved. We got married on September 27, 2003 in Colombia and my wife arrived in the United States on a K-3 on April 6, 2004. Unfortunately the K-3 process is slower now (probably 8 months to a year) than it was when we went through because the Missouri Serivce Center is bogged down. The K-1 fiance is much faster if speed is your only concern.

From your experience.... Utopiacowboy, its nice having your optomistic posts! I sure don't think I want to wait 2 years for my future wife to get her visa.

We are getting married in Colombia this december, then we can start the visa process for her. What can I do now to get ready? What can I get done while I'm in Colombia and with my wife? Documents? Signing papers? What can you recommend that I do right off the bat? Thanks! I am still getting my marriage visa so I can marry in Colombia, and I haven't had time to look much into what I need to do after we are married so she can get a visa to come to the US. Thanks! I truly appreciate it! -JT

VISA Well, speed is no longer an issue, well, not in the same way as before. Right now the Certificates of Birth and Singleness is good till 13th of Nov. Last night, I talked to my girlfriend for a couple hours and she said that she will look into trying to see if it would be possible to get the Visa while I'm still in Colombia. She said that it may be possible but either way, it looks like I would have to wait until early next year before being able to get it done.

My girlfriend said that it is possible to get a Visa while in Colombia but right now I don't think I'll be able to do it soon enough since I'm not in Bogota. Otherwise, I gotta wait until the end of the year to even start redoing everything all over again, so I'll see how it all goes between now and then.

JT, make sure you get the certified long copy of the marriage certificate from the notaria's office and get it translated into English while there - it's a lot cheaper. I used one of the translators listed on the US embassy's web site because I was going to be using the document for my visa petition. Also print off 4 copies of the G-325A and get her to sign them and fill them out while you are there - use blue ink and make sure all 4 are originals - you will be tempted to photocopy - don't do it. You will have to submit the 4 G-325As for her and 4 G-325As for you when you submit your visa petition back in the United States. You will also need to submit small photographs of yourself and her along with the petition - you can get those done while you are there as well. Check out the USCIS website for the full requirements: http://uscis.gov/graphics/formsfee/forms/files/I-129F.pdf

I showed her the stuff needed for the G-325A and told her about the photos, forms, and a lot of other stuff about the process. Still trying to think if there is still anything that needs to be done with the G-325A/photo requirement for her 7yr old (at least for the I-130, I believe).
I'll keep everyone updated,
Thanks-Dan

Update Just got back to the US a few days ago. Right now, I'm still in waiting mode. I re-applied for my Birth Certificate and gave a paper for my singleness certificate to my parents. As soon as I get the documents, I'm going to take time off from work and go back to Colombia so I can get married. Right now, I'm thinking of traveling down there as a tourist and then apply for the Marriage Visa while I'm down there. The office of visas wouldn't give it to me before since I already have an Official Visa that I could have gotten married with. I'm hoping that I can get the visa while I'm there, that way I can get to Colombia faster and spend more time with my future wife. I can only take a certain amount of days off from work at any one time.

Many people I work with are telling me that I should get a fiance visa for her (and daughter) so that we can get married in the US. I keep telling them about the stories of how unsuccessfull people are with the fiance visas.

We'll see about how things go in the next couple months. I'm hoping to travel in the end of Jan/beginning of Feb.

God Bless America!

Dan, Utopia has been peddling these..... "artificial" women over a few threads. I don't know if he has a financial incentive, or if he is speaking from personal experience as to how well these babes perform.

Ask him if he provides a money back guarantee?

My wife? Surely you jest, Dan. I've read many a time on this very board that I don't have a wife and after all, who would know bettter than they? As for the performance of the inflatable doll, they just lie there completely silent. They're perfect for the lazy gringo. Ok, they do squeak a little....

hey dan what part of the US are you in? I STILL hear that the marriage visa is much longer these days.

They approved my application for fiancee visa, and even "I" was shocked. Really, unless she is a criminal or you earn less than $10,000 per year ( was that the minimum?) They will give it to you. I didnt even go to her appointment. She went with photos and a stack of phone cards and one of my plane tickets.

The paperwork isnt hard either, just read it closely ok? If you stick it out, you will get better information about this here. also do searches for strings about this.

Utopia isnt selling inflatable dolls, he just really likes his. Inflatable dolls dont complain about stinky feet.

Colombian Consulate website I am impressed with the advice being given here by Cowboy and Gomez. there is a serious side after all, not like Elmo's darkside. Dan Cowboy is dead on balls right about the fact that a marriage visa does exist and it requires alot of documentation. Another thing you should concern yourself with is the fact that she has a child and i guess you would at some point in time have to address that legally as well, just like Gomez suggests; long term short term. Check out this site and you will see for yourself whats required and then see an attorney in this area of law. Http://www.colhouston.org/visa/matrimonio.htm, good luck.

hey dan re.the kid... Colombia is real tough on letting kids out of the country. We had Angelica's ex fill out some legal form giving his permission as the father, for danny to leave the country. Even with that, we hope it will be enough.

Btw, that guy is a typical pain in the ass ex. He procrastinated for about 6 weeks, when finally I called his mother (who likes me) and apparently she kicked him and his father out of the house until they returned with that document notorized. It had a copy of his cedula attached.

I hope he slowly disappears from our lives after they arrive, but until Danny is in the U.S. I wont piss him off.

I was amazed at the other post I read, where some fathers actually expect money before they will sign something allowing the child to leave with the mother. amazed, but not surprised.

her daughter As far as the daughter goes. Her father is about to go to Europe to his girlfriend he has over there for about a year or so. Yesterday, my girlfriend told me that they went to a notary and signed something giving her custody of the daughter. From meeting the guy myself, he seems to be a good person. I've heard that he has asked questions about me to his daughter and to my girlfriend. I would expect something like that anyway, it is his daughter that's involved here. He's pretty open to the idea of his daughter living in the US.
