Marriage 12/21 in Colombia HELP!

There has been some good material shared and I hope you wonderful people can help give me a little direction because the Colombian Consulate doesn't answer any questions over the phone! I have obtained a list of the required documents from online sources. Some of the comments you all have shared seems to imply that you had the documents translated to Spanish AFTER they were Apostilled??? I thought that the Tranlated documents had to be Apostilled too??? Once I have the documents for the Special Visa for Marriage in Colombia, do I take them personally to the Consulate? Or mail them? Will the Chicago Consulate accept my New York birth certificate?
How long for them to issue me the Special Visa to get married in COlombia? What should I do first? I am worried because the birth certificate cant be authenticated until within 3 months of the wedding!!?? I would really appreciate your help, and you are invited to the wedding Dec 21st in Cartagena!
Summary- I am a US citizen hoping to get tips on how to go about the process of geting my Visa to marry in COlombia before December. Thanks!

I am going through the same process, except that I am Canadian... For the above quoted issue, you should maybe talk to a politician that can speed it up. I'm not sure if it would be a congressman or whatever, but they should be able to speed up the process of documents that need to be processed by either state, or federal agencies. I hope you've paid your taxes.

Also, I wish you luck. Honestly, try not to fly off the handle and go crazy... its the best advice I can give you. Time flies quickly, and hopefully love will last a lifetime.

Ps. As far as the consulate... don't get angry at them, even though you may have every right to. You pretty much have to bend over and hope it doesn't hurt too much.

American marrying in Colombia My main concern isn't about the birth certificate. The requirements state that the birth cert. needs to be issued no more than 3 months prior to the wedding date (in my case, I can't have it notarized until Sept 21).

My main concern is whether the Chicago Consulate will accept, and notarize my birth Cert. which is from NY state? Do I mail my application for the marriage visa? Or in person? How long untill its issued? Does anyone have any experience doing the American getting married in COlombia thing?

Yes, we have experience doing the American married in Colombia thing. My experience is with the Colombian Consul in Houston - you take your application and your supporting documents and you sign in and wait your turn. When it's your turn you present everything to the consul and have a nice little chat and he puts the visa in your passport while you wait.

You are right - the documents will need to be translated and have an apostile for the notary on the translation. This is why wherever I could I had the original documents written in Spanish so I could avoid the expense of translation and extra apostiles.

As I recall, the consul does not really care about your birth certificate - it's the notaria in Colombia who wants the birth certificate. You will need an apostile from New York state as well as a translation. My advice is round up the documents you need for the visa first and get the visa - then round up the documents that you need for the notaria.

mas Live in Seattle and mailed to San Francisco with return envelope with postage. First time they returned becuase my passport was not included just copies. It took them two days and it was in the mail. Little nerve racking sending passport in mail but everything went well...

some offices will not process without all papers The Atlanta office would only process my husbands visa if he had the papers that the website only says are nessisary for the notary in Colombia. When asked they said "we don't need them, but we do have to see them to issue the visa"...whatever that is supposed to mean.

My husband had papers from Mississippi, Birth records in Louisiana, translations for all notorized and appostiled in Lousiana, and recieved the visa in Atlanta....so no problems about being in different states.

That wasn't my experience in Houston, Calena, but I guess it shows that JT ought to be sure to check with them in Chicago. Did the consul in Atlanta actually look at the rest of the papers?
