Mario Vargas Llosa vs. Gabriel García Márquez: Hot headed Latins?

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/06/opinion/06druckerman.html?_r=1&oref=slogin

Well, the topic often veers toward this anyways, differences in gringos, latinos relationships, etc. I think there are obviously cultural differences around the world. I am usually suspicious of these types generalizations (sometimes there is a kernel of truth in them, but alot of people end up using generalizations to support dumb, racist, or irrelevant arguments). But, I figured I'd post the article anyway to see what the people think about this. Has anyone read the Marquez biography mentioned in the article? I am curious if he punched back, or took the punch as the "cost of doing business."

Marital infidelity is one thing; but seducing a friend's wife is beyond the pale!

Far from being hot-headed, Vargas Llosa's single punch was an exercise in restraint.

In Latin America Infidelity is accepted and forgiven as the Norm. A cheater is castigated for a few weeks or so but soon after is forgiven and welcomed back into the family where in the USA or Northern Europe, upon discovery, the Cheater's Bags are packed and set out on the curb Pronto. While cheating certainly goes on in the USA(especially Miami)its not a cultural norm as it is latin America. Plenty of Women cheat there also(latin america) as I have observed in the country I have been to most, that being Colombia and Bogota in particular. Nothing wrong as long as you don't get caught...LOL

On Sept 17, 2008: Senator John McCain said, as he had many times before, that he believed the fundamentals of the economy were "strong."Hours later he backpedaled, explaining that he had meant that American workers were Strong.

I thought the article was going to have to do with the relative artistic merits of the two, but no, just infidelity, its a fact of life...

If its in Colombia, its the Male that is accepted back into the Family pronto after the cheating episode has blown over, if a Woman does it, its never forgotten. Probably lucky she escapes with her hide intact! LOL I did run across an mutual arangement(bogota) where both Husband and Wife stepped out on each other and it seemed to work OK . Last I knew they were still together and she was still stepping out for discreet afternoon liasons,,,
