In Manizales I stayed at the hotel avenida opposite the bus station for $30k single with lots of hot water. This is within easy walking distance of the town centre and the official tourist information in the town square. I arrived late at night and was able to cross the road to the hotel (a few yards) without the bother of a taxi. This means you can travel to Manizales at night/evening safely.
I don’t see any point in paying a taxi to go to other side of town to stay at the Manizales hostal, which was highly recommended but which I failed to find because my address was wrong – has it moved? The correct address is:
Mountain house
Calle 66 no 23 B 137
Calle larga de palermo
Barrio Guayacanes
Tel (57-6) 887 47 36

There is the Feria de Manizales in the second week of January which I missed. Of the coffee country towns, this was my favourite – Salento counting as a village.
Occasionally you can find something out of the ordinary. I visited the Tu y Yo motel, I must have been the only person to arrive on their own. like most motels it’s out of town, this one is on Via panamerica K2 close to town costing only 5k for the taxi fare one way. The taxi driver waited for me while I was given a tour. This is my first experience of a Colombian motel and I have no idea if it is typical but was certainly nothing like I have ever seen, well worth a visit and if a couple well worth the $45k for four hours price. I’m not going to spoil the fun and tell you what’s on offer in the way of facilities.

Saltador says on Mar 5, 2009, 07:37: If I recall correctly, "Tu y Yo" is one of those drive in motels for lovers. There are several in Manizales, "El Emperador" is the most well known. These places come in handy when you're staying with the in-laws and there are no doors on the rooms.

Crossing the street from the bus station to the hotel is o.k. but don't walk around down there at night. I had two guys pull a knife on me and my novia's brother down there last month.Fortunately they were drunker than we were.

You ought to post it in the "Cheap Hostals" section above. https://sites.google.com/site/colombianaturesite/nature-images 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

teeo9111 says on Mar 6, 2009, 10:40: Try walking from the bus station towards centro at night and we'll count how many blocks you get before some motherfoquer robs your ass. It is a very dangerous part of town for sure at night, daytime no problem. I am leaving for Manizales again on Sunday, can't wait....
