MANIZALES COLOMBIA AN AWESOME LITTLE CITY

THIS PLACE IS A JEWEL!! I came to Manizales Colombia on a hunch. I planned to stay a week or two. A month later I am still here and plan to stay another month. In fact, I plan to move here to live. The setting is gorgeous, the women are spectacular, and the cost of living is right. very secure here. Uribe's adminstration has sent the guerillas packing. I can walk in the main area of the city without fear at any time day or night. There is shopping, sports, movies, good food, theaters and access to natural wonders. The city is full of students and the vibrant atmosphere is pervasive. I just hope that it isn't discovered too soon by the boomers retiring in the USA - there goes the neighborhood as they say - hahahaha.

My friend Richard Dickerman has lived here for more than three years and knows a lot more about the area than I do. With his permission, you can also contact him at dickerman at une.net.co

bogjudge... jus my opinion, but I wouldn't worry too much about a flood of Baby Boomers retiring and moving to Manizales. JMHO.
But, it would be interesting if there were ACCURATE STATS on Gringo Retirees moving to anywhere and everywhere in Colombia.

Now, there was a piece in some journal just last month about one of the perfect places to retire being Pasto, where my gf is from and it is WAY OFFFFF! THE BEATEN GRINGO TRAIL. So, I am not sure who wrote that, but... I didn't see a gringo PERIOD, when I went to Pasto a year ago.

Now, I'm not saying there won't be a certain small gringo boomer exodus south over the next 20 years, but this is Colombia, and as wonderful as many of us think it might be... we are still, I think, in a tremendous minority.

You'll still be saying: "Hola!" and not 'hello' to your neighbors, for many years to come, I think.

But, good luck!
Enjoy!
If I wasn't tied up with one colombiana, I believe I would make my next trip to Manizales, from all I have read and heard.

U can run but you can't hide (in Manizales!)

I agree with el feliz. If I also was not involved with somebody, Manizales or Buca would be my ports of call. Actually, from hearing what people said about Manizales, it sounds a lot like Villavicencio, minus the student population. I also don't think we have much to worry about, as far as baby boomers over-populating Colombia. Give me a break. I am unfortunately old enough to hang with retirees or soon to be retirees. The "brave" ones talk about Costa Rica. They think that is a great opportunity and an adventure. I have met ZERO people who would seriously consider retiring in Colombia. So, like I said; at least from my little corner of the US, there is no danger of gringos showing up in droves in Colombia.

Manizales I also agree. I am a retired U.S. Army Colonel and businessman from the U.S., I have property here and investments here. It is a great city and If I can help anybody, just call upon me. I remember 1 year ago when I moved here permanently, I did not know a damn thing.

i was in costa rica in 93 and there were few gringos back then and NO american real estate companies. 2 years later it was flooded. the costa rica government did a good job promoting the country as an ecotourism mecca. it worked. as long as the government remains stable in Colombia and the conditions are safe, the boomers will come. it will start in 5 years and will have a head full of steam in 10 years.

Yes, I would be inclined to agree with you tejas, having lived thru it already in Hawaii, then Costa Rica and now Panama, except for one little factor. SECURITY!! If the Colombian govt. or U.N. for that matter cant put the guerilla to rest, then only the most adventurous risktakers and mujeriegos will find their way to that otherwise enchanting country.

Manizales has 13 universities, and a significant portion of the population are colegio and university students. Most parents, the ones who can afford it, in Caldas have their kids getting educated at one of these universities....Manizales, for me, is the best location.....sucks if you are a taxista working late at night..they are favorite targets...

.Just my opinion...and brought to you by a lowest of the low
