Malaria in SanCipriano?

Next week I am off to SanCipriano. Since it is located in the Valle del Cauca I was wondering if there is any malaria over there?
Next I am off to San Augustin which is, I assume, malariafree. Correct me if I am wrong.

thx

There is malaria in San Cipriano. I personally wouldn't take prophylactic pills though if that's what you're thinking. Then, again your comfort zone might be different than mine. I wear a good repellent and during nightime some long-sleeves and pants. All over Colombia's pacific coast there is malaria transmission. Not all of Valle del Cauca has malaria transmission, urban areas there is very little if any (none confirmed in Cali).

Another reason for covering up and having mosquito netting in your windows or bed is the othermosquito-spread disease, the dengue fever. It's endemic is much of Colombia, including Cali. My daughter got it last time in Cali and it kept her in bed for good 10 days. The other version of dengue with bleeding is more serious.

Oh yeah, mosquito netting is a must in the pacific coast. I've never seen anyone sleep in mosquito netting in Cali though, would seem a bit paranoid to me (but with your experiences maybe not so much). I wonder, how long ago were these cases of dengue? and if you don't mind telling, what barrio in Cali? I believe public health strategies to reduce dengue in Cali have been very successful.

We had to sleep under a toldillo the year and a half we lived in barrio La Flora near Chipichape . The mosquitos were really bad. The repellent I had to use nightly took the paint off my computer. A friend who still lives in La Flora got Denge last year. I´m glad to be out of there. Thankfully don´t have that problem at all now living at 2100 meters.

Don't think it happened in Cali but on the finca near San Antonio outside of Cali. Probably 20 years ago. My barrio in Cali was Cuarto de Legua west of La Quinta and south of the Plaza de Toros-never use netting or had screens or AC so it was open all the time.

I believe my Tia Desi's house is a little more north of the Plaza

Tio Gator is right, I used to live in Tequendama, just north of the Bull Ring, in the good old time when it was still totally residential, with no other clinics than Clinica Tequendama and all the houses were inhabited by families and children played in Parque Tequendama.

My daughter's dengue case was a long time ago and she got infected when we were visiting grndparents at San Fernando, a little bit further north from Tequendama, when San Fernando was still residential and the houses were inhabited by large and traditional cale~no families with bunches of teenagers and kids and people who knew each other and were neighbourly.

I hear about dengue in Cali every now and then, even recently. There was a peak period a few years ago, now it's been calmer.

Interesting about these cases, it's a shame updated stats of disease surveillance is hard to find.

I found this on the newswire though...
Seems like global warming is being blamed for increased cases (and risk) of malaria in certain areas. Higher precipitation is causing greater amounts of still waters which are great breeding grounds for mosquitoes.
