Mail

What's the cheapest way to mail a package from Bogota, Colombia to the US? I hear there are DHL offices but that would probably be too expensive (for me). Can it just go through a national post office? Would that be cheaper? It will be a small to medium sized box, probably less than 10 pounds... just souvenir stuff, no alcohol, jewelry, currency, or anything suspicious.

i went to the national post office here in Cali last year and asked the same question.you have an option to ship 5-8 days delivery time or 15-20 days delivery time.if i remember correctly for the 5-8 day delivery it was 58,0000 pesos for the first 500 grams and 16,500 pesos for each aditional pound.and i beleive the 15-20 day delivery time 60,0000 pesos for the first kilo and 11,500 pesos for each aditional kilo.but iam not sure.maybey someone on the board can clarify this.

I once looked at shipping by courier and was shocked at the pricing.
My friend tried the mail several times without problems. Be warned that there is a tax on declared value.

My husband always used Deprisa (from Avianca) to send me stuff from Tuluá to Denver. I always got his packages within 3-5 business days and DHL was the one who delivered them to my door. But one thing, it's kind of expensive (average price was about $50 USD) and they check EVERYTHING and make you open every bag, every little box and every letter you want to send. There was some stuff he couldn't even send me that I thought was stupid but I guess it's their policy.

The shipping industry has been and continues to be one huge rip off all through Latin America . From the Corporations ( Fedx , Ups, DHL ect ect ) in cooperation with the Govt. Hands in your pocket deal .
It has been a serious handicap when doing Biz between the States & Latin America..

Not sure if they offer this Service to the USA(they offer it in reverse, US to Col) you may want to try Avianca Air Express. Various pick-up and drop off sites throughout the Major Cities(INCLUDING Bogota) in Colombia. If you sending from Miami to Col, Servientrega is one of the Best and very reliable. There are a few other smaller but equally as good here in greater Miami.

Here is another idea; if you can find someone traveling to the US from Bogota, ask them if they could drop off your Package in the Airport Postoffice. I believe the Airports have those Self service Kiosks where you buy the postage from the machine. You may want to place an Ad in the Bogota Craigslist(free)to find such a Person. I have also seen Ads posted at the Bogota Platypus Hostel for the exact thing you want to do. Always travelers there heading for the states in a few days(usually) these Hostel Travelers are usually a fairly Honest Lot. Good luck

Correction-I see Diana's above post and Avianca does offer the service, didn't realize it was that expensive, $50! Wow!

Diana--On stupid items unable to mail,I attempted to Send a Box of Chocolates via Avianca Air Express from Miami to Bogota-prior to San Valentin's Day. They refused, saying it was competing with Colombia's Chocolate Industry to accept a package like this! LOL

I will have to second Diana. We have used Deprisa a few times to send documents and small packages from Colombia to the US and have not had any problems. In fact, I think we used them based on her recommendation. However, I don't recall it being quite that expensive.

I found that Expresito Carga was the cheapest they are in Bogota and other parts of Colombia. They are also very reliable and they pick up directly from your residence. You can find their telephone # on the phone book or online at www.expresitocarga.com. I have used them on several occasions and have been very happy with their service. I now live in San Francisco and I still use them here to send packages to Colombia since they offer door-to-door service.
