Madrid Set For Bogota Friendly
Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe have announced that they have reached a verbal agreement to play a friendly against Real Madrid in Bogota on the 6th August this year.
The date marks 470 years since the city of Bogota was founded and as part of the celebrations, Santa Fe will play a friendly against the Spanish champions, as announced by club president Armando Farfán on Friday evening.
"It is a great thing to do to bring a team as important as Real Madrid to Colombia," he told Caracol Radio.
Farfán went on to explain that the two parties currently have a verbal agreement in place for the friendly to take place and that he expects for the contract to be signed and details announced within the next couple of days.
Millonarios - another Bogota side - were recently involved in seemingly unsuccessful talks to bring Madrid over to Colombia to celebrate the career of Alfredo Di Stefano, a player highly-revered at both clubs, but may have renewed hope of pulling off a deal now that Madrid will be in the country.
Di Stefano was part of the successful Millonairos side that won four league titles in the 'El dorado' era Colombian league of the late forties and early fifties, in a team that also included players of the caliber of Adolfo Pedernera and Néstor Raúl Rossi, and it would seem only fitting for Madrid and Millonairos to meet in honour of the forward.

romy says on Apr 28, 2008, 11:16: I still have a lot of connection to the 'colonial power' that would not make it very hard for me to cheer for them. In fact in the Euro I will be cheering for Spain. Besides, I do understand how badly this colony called Colombia was pillaged, so I do hold some resentment towards that.
