Lost in space

Is it just me or do you guys feel like no new post will ever reach more than 20 comments? It seems that no matter how popular the post is, it keeps going down, down, down, down, down……….the list then disappears into the final frontier or el culo de la burra. .

Still, Elmo is right, as is everyone else who has made the same comment. Let's say someone goes away for a week. They want to catch up on the news/views/chit chat. With the present style, if they left a comment in a post more than a couple of days old, no one would ever see it, no one would ever respond to it.

Peter (Moderator) says on Jun 25, 2007, 06:40:

Ah I see, yes, if you put it like that, true.

I added a link at the top, "recent comments", that lists posts in the order of their most recent comment. Would that help? (It might take a while to start adding posts with their latest comments.. it only works with new comments)

I'm thinking of ways to make this work better guys :) All input is welcome!

Here's another one:

You've tried a "preview pane" format in the "new" page, the "friendly" page, etc. Is there a way to code this so it's a fixed, and smaller size? I've noticed that if someone types single space, it only allows four or five lines. But if they insert a couple of paragraph breaks or insert an large image, the preview pane expands quite a bit. The result it a lot of scrolling or "page down, page down, page down."

The previous PBH format had the right mixture - if a person wanted to see the preview, they could visit the home page, which is the new page with this format. If they wanted to rapidly see 50 posts, with the most recent activity at top, who the last poster was, and be taken with one mouse click to the last unread post, they went directly to the "friendly zone" or the "buy, sell" page. If you could replicate the above, I think it would make a lot of people happy, keep the traffic up, and continue to attract new members.

Tinto (Moderator) says on Jun 25, 2007, 06:59:

Oh, and keep the "edit" feature at the top of your to-do list, please. I have gotten into the habit of typing very rapidly and hitting "submit" because the old format used to time out frequently. Now I do that and all my subject verb disagreements, is-if-it typos, and various other grammar errors are there for the world to see.

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jun 25, 2007, 07:14:

I'm with Tinto.
The most recent feature helps, but is not as obvious as last commented thread goes on top. You also need to make the viewing choices (the line on top with "home, recent, most etc) graphically more visible, larger font, darker, another color. Could you also put something "Colombian" on the page? Some kind of image, like sombrero vueltiao, a cup of coffee...on the home page?

I need the edit button very badly also since I type fast, sloppily, am half blind, have a bad light and my black keyboard is almost worn out.

Oh, I want to have the signature back too!

Cheers,
Desi

How about getting the “edit” option back?.
For a guy like me who makes many mistakes, is nice to go back and make corrections. Look at my last comment, I meant to say “where IS that post?” NOT! “where IN that post” Now I look like a total dim-witted jerk off in front of the world, like I attended special education classes all my life. Maybe I did but no one needs to know that.

I think it is safe to say people would like ALL the features of the old version and probably working in pretty much the same way as Tinto described.

But definitely the feature of having the posts stay at the top of the list when new comments are added is key, IMHO.

I see that Pete has most graciously welcomed and taken into account suggestions, now how about dumping the monkey? that’s more in tune with Brazil or Costa Rica, not Colombia, only my 2 cents.
Not too many monkeys running around in Bogota, Barranquilla, Medellin, Cali etc.
I think Colombia is famous for most bird species, how about un guacamaya wearing a sombrero voltiao and playing accordion.
Another suggestion, how about a Chibcha symbol.
I wear quite an expensive chibcha pennant on my chain is suppose to be the god of fertility, not that I need it, as a matter of fact the last thing I want is another damn kid, I rather be shooting blanks.

Anyone want to make a little design icon from that?

Desideria (Moderator) says on Jun 25, 2007, 08:55:

The one in the middle is from cultura tolima. It's a widely recognize pre-columbian symbol associated with Colombia, the same as the first one, the El Dorado Royal Float, from cultura muisca. The third one is from cultura quimbaya. I was actually looking for the rana tayrona, a lovely minimalistic fertility symbol that I have in a chain (not that I needed one either), but couldn't find a decent picture.

I agree, the Tolima pre-columbian god of fertility would do. Too bad I don't know how to make a desighn, but I'm sure somebody can.

Desi

My two cents: The monkey is good as a reminder to be civil and follow the basic rules, so I'd keep it next to the comments box I am typing in right now.

I have no artistic ability, either, but agree that restoring the hummingbird or the famous hat or something like that would be a good idea for the top of the site. If you can't make up your mind, rotate the icons/artwork every once in a while until you decide on something you really like.

You're right, there's the "barrel of monkeys" thing - the complete opposite of a somewhat orderly discussion, but the little guy is cute and he's pointing to a good message. Anyway, if people don't listen to the damn monkey, it's now easier than ever to just poof! their comments. Before it took forever to find the bad comments by date and time, now it's one mouse click while in the thread. If people don't understand that, or don't 'self-moderate' by blocking their enemies, there's probably no hope for them.

Maybe a monkey is not so bad, is just that I have real unpleasant memories. I grew up around monkeys and remember getting into a vicious fight with one when I was only 5 years old.
I was eating a nice ripe mango “chancleta” the nice juicy sweet long flat ones one and this vicious crazy modefoque attacked me. We went at it, rolling in the dirt as he scratched me and bit me while I tried to rip his balls right off .
After that fight they never bothered me again.
Then when I was about 10 years old my buddies and I would stand around teaching them how to masturbate and spit on people

I had a little monkey when I lived in Colombia, during the first month when we shared an apartment with my brother. Actually, it was he who bought it. It had a rope around the waist that I removed, it was all over the place and I used to bathe it in the bathroom sink....at the end of the bath it was me who was soaking wet while the monkey was totally dry!

I painted his nails red in both hand and feet and he was the cutest thing. One day my brother sold him and I have never forgiven hom for selling my monkey!

Desi

Just kidding, I really think the middle symbol desi posted is cool. I'd use that for sure. it's not as complicated as the raft one.

I bet lochdhu could do something with it.

They've got monkeys in the park in Monteria along the Sinu River. I'm not sure a lot of people even know they're there because they stay high up in the trees. Hell, people were probably eating the bastards.
