My friend and I were helping a Colombian family with their packing and they asked me, "Tienes afan?". I have heard my friend use this word "afan" with her boyfriend several times but as always, I assumed I understood. I replied, "No...no estoy bien..."
Well, I was mistakened and it cost me. What I thought would be a 30 mins. task turned out to be 2 1/2 hours job! During that time, my friend sent me a text on my cell (and I was standing beside her!) saying that I should've said "Si, tengo afan..." and we would've been out sooner.
Then she proceeded to say that most Colombians, or most Latinos, are like this. If you say you have time, they will take all of your time.
Well now I know. Next time someone asks me, "Tienes afan?" I will say in a jiffy, "Si, tengo muchas cosas para hacer!"
I consider Spanish my second language but I should know better in that I should never assume I understand what they're saying all the time!

Mononoke28 says on Oct 26, 2007, 09:32: This applies to everything in Colombia. If someone says "Tiene hambre?" and you say "un poquito" they serve you a 3 course meal while all you wanted to eat was maybe a muffin with a glass of milk. Diana |

Imagine our frustration.... I remember my mom would be like, oh we're going to stop of at so and so's house for a little bit in the morning.... Come dinner time, we were ready to go!.... Now, I go prepared to take a nap, while I wait for a short visit with friends.... The trouble about trying to make yourself stupider than you really are is that you very often succeed. - CS Lewis |
