VOIP Either take a VOIP ATA or VOIP IP phone with you and you can have free calls back to the USA. If that's not available to you just make your calls through a PC through service providers like Net2Phone.com, DialPad.com or any other service providers. There are literally thousands of options in VOIP for cheap calls through the internet to USA from any destination.

If you can't master that then maybe you better explore callback which is a service that gives you dialtone in the USA by first dialing a specific number that when triggered will call back a specific programed phone number in Colombia giving you USA dialtone. I used it for a year in Colombia from my cell phone and it worked well but VOIP is the way to go now. Go to a cyber cafe in Colombia and seek some advice, otherwise, .40-.50 cents US/minute is about what you are stuck with.

Callcenters (cabinas telefonicas) the cheapest way to call abroad from Colombia either if you do it from your own computer or use one at any of the internet cafe, will be by getting a diadema (set of headphones and mic), download a softphone from one of the providers and get an account.

Call centers buy minutes from the voip providers and thru gateways resell them. A minute for them costs between 100 and 200 colombian pesos, (3.4c) (5c) (depending destines)for the final customers they charge between $400 pesos and $1000 pesos.

with broadband connection and in your own computer at your office or apartment your friends and falilies could call you to your gatewate a a local (USA) rate. Like some cell companies in the USA states won't charge you extra for USA long distance calls.
