Looking for Aguardiente Blanco

I have a Colombian boyfriend and I want to surprise him for his birthday with a couple of bottles of Aguadiente Blanco del Valle. Does anyone know where I can get it in Chicago, IL or order it online? I've sent emails to a few distributors but no one has emailed me back. I need it by August 15th. Thanks!

This is a question for our resident Chicagoan, Gomezman. ¿Gomez, dónde estás?

Fiesta supermarkets carry it in Texas...I don't know if there are Fiesta's in your area. There is an online liquor store in Miami that has it as well...I can't find the thread/link at the moment.

What exactly is it? My Spanish English dictionary translates Aguardiente to Brandy but my fiancee says its not brandy. So, what is it and why is it so special? Maybe, I will have her bring me a bottle when she flies in 2 weeks time.

Aguardiente... Is basically a liquor with anise. Reminds me of ouzo. I drink it with Colombians, no one else here is south louisiana will touch it a second time.

Is it like Moonshine or worse? "no one else here is south louisiana will touch it a second time." So does it taste like a schnapps, moonshine, horsepi**? Should I tell her to return it to the store and not bring it here?

vicshere says on Aug 6, 2005, 09:55:

Aguardiente not moonshire not even close.....more like Greek ozo.....thick clear somewhat sweet licorice tasting liquid.....moonshine is almost pure alcohol and some of it will burn the skin off your mouth...

rjstuff which was that dictionary so I know not to buy it.
Seriously guys. Aguardiente aka guaro aka la caneca.....the drink favoured by most Colombians....except me...I hate the stuff....perhaps it's because it tastes excatly like licorice/aniseed.
It's a clear alcohol roughly 35-40% but it is an acquired taste....also doubles up as a very efective purgant....must be taken first thing in the morning with crushed garlic......i'm already convulsing on the floor.....EEEUUUUUUGH

quindioman says on Aug 8, 2005, 06:53:

PS On the caneca thing.....caneca is actually Colombian slang for bottle....media caneca = half a bottle......la caneca=the bottle (usually of Guaro)

Crazy4Cali says on Aug 8, 2005, 07:44:

If you don't like the taste... ...don't worry, the taste seems to go away after the first caneca. So it's not a problem for the subsequent canecas...(so far as I can remember, anyway)

That said, I thought it's main advantage was its low price more than its good taste.

my dictionary can beat your dictionary! quindioman - I have a Vox compact - Spanish and English Dictionary - the entry is as follows:

Aguardiente m liquor, brandy.

Maybe they don't have an alcoholic expert on staff! jejeje

Its popularity among Colombians has declined dramatically. Even when we have gatherings at my wife's apartment, we are far more likely to have a bottle of Ron Medellin than aquardiente.

Popularity Declined?
Where did you get that information further away than your family? If anything aguardiente has become more popular, and while years ago it was not a elegant enough drink for many, something that rum has always been, it has now been accepted even in the most elegant parties. And when I was a teenager aguardiente will always come after rum and coke and beer, now a days teeagers love aguardiente. The only area in Colombia where rum outsells rum is the coast.

Que sabelotodo. There was even an article in the mainstream press a while back about its decline in popularity among Colombians. Lots of hand-wringing about it. Read this: http://www.euromonitor.com/Alcoholic_Drinks_in_Colombia
In the last 10 years, sales of aguardiente have fallen 34% from 9.9 million cases to 6.9 million caes.

yes and no I know el guaro is alive and well everytime I go back. I hanged around with my 22 year old cousin and his mates (late teens/early twenties-Cali) I always had my crate of poker but I know a few chipped in for la caneca.....the wretched beverage is ingrained in Colombian culture hate it or love. If there is a party in Colombia...it ain't a party if there's no guaro....(i'm more the viejo caldas ron type)

Aguardiente Well I guess I will have to believe the statistics, but yet is not what I see every day on the street, since I am an aguardiente drinker I find myself day by day with more people wanting aguardiente on a night out.

Mi Tierra Restaurant at 828 St. Clair Avenue stocks it. You may want to ask them how they get it. http://mitierracolombia.tripod.com/menu.html
