Looking for a puppy

I'm looking to buy a puppy , prefer a border collie/blue heeler mix, but will settle for either of those breeds or a black lab. I can find one in the states, but it would be alot easier if I could find one in country down there. Can anyone help me out?

puppy i got a puppy when i arrived here. i bought him from a vet rather than going to a pet store or going through breeders. I don't trust breeders at all since they tend to have the poor bitch as a money machine. The problem always with getting a puppy from anyone other than owners who are selling puppies from their own dogs is you usually don't get to see the mother which i think is really important. i also brought my two adult dogs from argentina here. i think if you can avoid taking a puppy on a plane you definitely should. so buy here but be careful that it comes from a decent source.

..... I would avoid breeders too. There is more chance that the puppy is inbred...like my dog.

Sure we got a purebread black lab but he is also inbred and has a few hyperactivity problems.

Helen made the best suggestion by saying to ask a vet. Vets will be responsible and give you a dog which is well bred. Also, most vets care about animals and aren't there to make money out of selling sick dogs.

Go for a lab! :-)

Totally agreed, though vets here usually buy from breeders too. they do at least make sure the puppy is healthy etc. Make sure you get a dog that will fit in your house/apartment. don't go for a big one just because you like them. i have a boxer and two little things i picked up in the streets of buenos aires. the boxer is fine because i have a house with a garden and someone to walk him. but if i was in an apartment he would go potty....

Adoption If your are not set on having a breed dog, give adoption a try, there are plenty of dogs up for adoption at zoonosis, which otherwise have to be put to sleep.

breed is not so important, I would take an adoption if I liked the dog. The mix i mentioned is just my preference and not set in stone. By the way, I'm still building my spanish vocabulary, how do I tell the vet I'm looking for a Blue Heeler(australian shepherd) or Border Collie. Most of the colombians know what a Lab is.

it'll be tough to find an asutralian shepherd here in Colombia, I've yet to see one, and border collies are really hard to find as well, I've seen a lady in parque del virrey with a really beautiful one, but I've never asked her where she got it, the other two are kind of corronchos, they don't look too border collie. If I were you I'd really give adoption a shot, there's tons of homeless dogs here, and it really breaks my heart to know how much they suffer...people here are not into adoption, many people get a lab puppy cause they think it's cute, and then when it grows up and starts to cause damage in thier tiny apartments they abandon the poor thing on the street... that's how i found the poodle I adopted, about ten years ago. she had been dumped in a place nearby called "la valvanera".

Two of my dogs were dumped on the street when they were about 30 days old. they would have died withiin days doubtless. they are the smartest, most resilient little buggers and virtually never need to go to the vet - unlike the boxer who seems to get everything possible. Adopt a dog and give it a chance...

terco panzone You'll have to make sure that the dog can adjust to the weather of south america. Some dogs are not able to live in high elevations. My friend once moved to Bogota and her great dane puppy died because his heart couldn't handle the change in elevation.

Also some dogs are cold weather dogs while some can handle humidity and heat. The vet will be able to tell you which type of dog is best for you and your location.

I’m a very nice perro, I eat only cheap stuff, anything that’s greasy, deep fried and cost 200 pesos. I ‘m toilet trained and could wipe my own butt. No need to pay expensive vet, I already got health insurance and if I die, just leave me in the middle of the street, the goleros will take care of my ass real good. I’m a happy perro and most times you’ll find me sucking on my own balls, I don’t bother nobody.

PROUD ENEMY OF THE RIGHT WING!!!!!! THANK YOU!

Nice Elmo But you sound pretty self sufficient, why would you need an owner? :)

Like I said I'd give adoption a shot if I liked the dog, it's looks and personality. I like huskies and malemutes, but don't want one there for the very reason that they are cold weather dogs and it's not that cold in bucaramanga. I like the Border collies and heelers because of their intelligence and resiliency. I've had dogs in the states most of my life. At one time I had an alskan timber wolf/malemute mix. Best dog I ever had.

Dogs Collie should not be a problem to find, I see several around my park everyday. Australian Shepherd, I would not know how it looks so can not answer. But anyhow in Spanish simply say Collie and you will be in the right direction. The Shepherd should simply be Pastor Austrialiano, but I will ask, I have to take my dog to the vet tomorrow to get prophilaxis done.

elmodefoque You'd may get too spoiled if you were to be my perro. My current dog gets a t-bone steak once a day, has a swimming pool that he can swim in all year around. Gets professional doggy massages every week by some big breasted blond. Plus he has his own king size bed with clean sheets every other day.

My dog is spoiled and my housekeeper who is from a very poor village in Peru looks at us like we're freaks when she's asked to cook a t-bone for the dog and Kraft dinner for us. hehehehe

Just got back from Vet According to my vet Border Collies can be found, not easily but not impossible. He said there are two breeds one from the US and one from Argentina, he rocommends the latter as the US breed seem to have problems with the retina. The Australian Shepherds he said are quite difficult, he only knows of one person that breeds them in Villa de Leyva.

My opinion is that my number one choice for a dog would be the Border Collie. These dogs display an amazing intelligence. They ALWAYS place high (if not number one) in any Rodeo or Trials contest. The speed, intelligence, obedience and agility of these animals during competition is truly incredible.
Border Collie with Puppy

Interesting, but not surprising that Argentina has the better dogs. Better than the best, that would be something to see.

Sociedad Protectora de Animals
In every city in Colombia there's a "Sociedad Protectora de Animales", which is the humanitarian foundation for animals. There you'll have the opportunity to see many abandoned puppies looking for a home. Do something good for you and for another living being and adopt a homeless dog. Think about it, and realize that that'll be just amazing. Take care bro'.

I own a Siberian Husky, by the way; and he adapted very well to tropical conditions! Anyways, something is for sure: a dog will bring happiness to your life all the way...
