Steel-string (American style)? You cannot. I looked and looked and went to Miami to buy one. I think that Tower Records in Tesoro now has an Ovation.

For a Spanish style guitar, there are quite a few stores around. Tower Records also has those. El Camino, downtown. A few more around the downtown core.

The others are aplsttered around the city...I cannot remember them all now, sorry.

Hey catfish, your profile says you live in the states.. if so, buy 1 in the states and take it with you.. In april we visited every so called musical instrument store in Medellin and its nothing like in the states.. Even most of the local musicians we talked to do their buying in Bogota.. Tower records in Tesoro has an instrument section with the largest (nothing spectacular) selection around, but remember its a CD store.. The other music stores are so small that their is really no selection at all.. These stores are nothing like what you find in the states.. I hope this helps, in advance..............

There's a shopping center next to citibank on junin that has a few music stores. There are several scattered throughout downtown. I don't remember exact locations but I remember seeing many small stores by just walking around.

Even if you want a decent Spanish nylon string acoustic the crop available in Medellin is pretty weak. I too recommend bringing your own steel string from the US. Better to have a hardshell case, buy bubble wrap and the UPS stores sell guitar size boxes. Check it as one of your two checked items. I know you are like me and make multiple trips every year so lugging hard to get stuff on the plane is totally feasible.

If you want an awesome Spanish nylon string I recommend Alpujarra an Argentinan brand. They are like the Taylor of Spanish guitars. Give a good nylon a shot and you may just buy one!

Thanks all..for the effort. It is to a present. I can buy in the states, just didn't want the headache of something cumbersome to worry about on the airplane and thought for sure they had a store here for that stuff. peace

Catfish - if it is a present for an aspiring Colombian musician I'd go nylon string. Sweeping statement alert: No one in Colombia plays a steel string guitar - even Juanes who is endorsed by Fender.

You can find something decent in Medellin - the tech mall Monterrey has a decent music store on the bottom level near the center. They carry some pianos as well. AND in the same mall on the same floor is a smaller slim place that also sells AND gives guitar lessons - so if this a gift for an aspiring musician you can give the gift of lessons at the same time and harness the instructor to aid in the purchase - always an excellent choice. The mall is adjacent to the metro Poblado station.

Between Cathedral Metropolitana (Parque Bolivar) and Avenida Oriental there is a music Store on a corner - I don't know the exact address but the area I speak of is about 3 blocks - easy to find the big glass window with all new guitars.

Lastly there are two decent ones. One on Carabobo (CR 52) 44-114 Almacen La Gabela - they also do repairs and have a luthier on site.

And

http://www.elredoblante.com - They have 3 locations and I'm not sure which one deals with the public - they are mainly a distributor and you may need to order what you are looking for as I'm not sure what they stock - they do deal with some big brands. You could get a wider variety and leads from these guys.

Yeah if this is a gift buy it in Colombia and spare the hassle of packing and worrying. I could see flying it with you if there was a must have guitar...

i used to see some places in diamonte and el hueco but as for a 'guitar' store, the last place i remember...where i bought mine, was in either maranilla or la ceja...i forget now. it's a guitar maker right on the main plaza. take a ride up the hill...well worth it and just ask around. mine was fantastic and cost me under a bill.
