This article in el Colombiano (published in Medellin) says that the author of the Colombia Lonely Planet Guide admits he's never been to Colombia, he just researched info through a former colombian girlfriend.
That gives you an idea of the quality of those travel guides.

gorgonabob says on May 16, 2008, 15:50: Of course the writers of the Lonely Planet guide book were in Colombia. There were three, two visiting the country and one (the idiot above) doing background info.. He was not supposed to come to the country. So dont get all worked up about it. There is a lot of missinformation being spread about. The writer visited my business so i should know.

Chriscan (☼Travelguide writer) says on May 16, 2008, 17:35: I found that it had some interesting summaries of history and cultural information. It is very limited as a guide, overplayed many of the dangers and very limited information on hotels. I was surpised how it omitted some cities that have populations in the 100000's. It is however the only english information you will get in a book. Beam me up Scotty; No intelligent life here. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Man Tequila says on May 17, 2008, 22:30: I have the LP. The guy who never visited Colombia was just supposed to summarize the history, food and drink. You could do this without going to the country. And the food and drink section certainly reads like he never went to Colombia.
