Lonely Planet Colombia

the new Lonely Planet Colombia guidebook is out and on the lonelyplanet.com website... should be published in a couple of weeks

the main writer actually knows a bit about the country having lived in Cali for a few years so the book is pretty good which makes a change... had a quick read through.. its nicely down and actually makes an effort to get off the gringo trail now and then

you can buy a section online or wait to the whole book comes out....

i read through the medellin section and coffee country section... pretty accurate.

if you want a guidebook id wait for this one to come out.

Thanks, I was wondering about this.

What do folks think of the Colombia Footprint Guide, 3rd edition, that was just published a couple of months ago?

It has good recent reviews on Amazon. I am returning to Colombia in about 6 weeks and wondering which book I should purchase.

I hope this one has a better cover than the fourth edition, which was pretty mediocre if you ask me. I also hope it happens to be thicker. It's ridiculous that the Costa Rica book is about three times thicker than the Colombia one when Colombia is about fifty times larger than Costa Rica!!

The footprint guide is pretty good. Vastly superior to the last LP, which wasn't hard as that was the worst travel guide ever written.

its a lot thicker than the last with a lot more info and as i said the author has 'been around' colombia for more than two years..... and travelled to a lot of off the beaten track places...

the footprint colombia guidebook writer is also a good bloke.. and knows colombia.. albeit less than the lonely planet writer...

both are good... but the lonely planet colombia book probably had a lot more research and time on the ground.. the authors i would say spent over six months in colombia researching the book

I'm glad to hear it and I look forward to buying it. Let's hope this new travel guide does Colombia justice!

You mean he actually went to Pacific Choco?

Because the last writer was too much of a chickenshit.

How much of this edition was written over the phone from Costa Rica?

' a la orden!'

hummh.. I'll have to call the local Barnes & Noble store... and see if they will order it.

Stillllll, after four years of traveling to Colombia... I have yet to see this store carry the book on Colombia or any book about Colombia, while they have books on every other lil stinkin country in the world.... Still... the Stigma remains, for many/most.

nothin I say is to be takn for my words, but rather for the words of Sailor Jerry.

The last book didn't even have decent maps of the cities, never mind out of the way locales. I look forward to looking at the new one.

There are good on line maps of Medellin, Bogota, Cali. So, it is not difficult to do this on paper at all, Peter does it in the Travelguide. I do not expect a tourist map to be perfect... but the last Colombia LP was so bad that half the Medellin hotels and restaurants, and many major tourist areas, were off the map completely (arrow 3km to Another Major Site Discussed in this Guidebook). If this is the case, maybe more than one map is needed?

I don't have much experience with that, so I assume you're right. But I do know the ones in the old LP were the worst I have seen in any guide book, and thought that long before the truth of the author came out.

By the way, the Lonely Planet web site says that this new Lonely Planet Colombia guidebook should be available on June 14. It is still listed as "pre-order" on the various book sites like Amazon.com.

One thing that I don't like about the Footprint guide is that it is hard cover (a thin cover, but hard nevertheless)
