I have only been to the Carling Academy for concerts and once to La Mazorca, never been to the market. I have heard there is a quite nice up and coming part of Brixton, IMO Brixton looks like a rather rough area and I wouldnt go there on my own.

La Mazorca- it's a nice restaurant but the food is not all that, I have friends who go there on Friday and Saturday nights and have a nice time dancing ( I go to the occasional concert as well but i'm not into clubbing) but there is a nice place in Fulham which is much safer and the food there is very home style cooking, it's called Mambo's.

Brixton used to be a pretty rough burrough but it's changed a lot and is now considered upwardly mobile. Well most parts of it is, anyway. Just looks at the property prices ! It's become a desirable area to live in. I wouldn't be seen dead there, but that's just my opinion.

Property prices in the whole of London are sky high, first time buyers have it tough. Brixton is in the Lambeth borough and I wouldn't say it's considered upwardly mobile, when people hear brixton they think of gangs, shootings and other crimes but that is becoming common place in the whole of London, it's becoming quite scary....

But Brixton has good things to offer too, like the market for example :-)

I did not like the food and I did not like paying 6 pounds for an arepa. I am not fond of most Colombian dishes as I am a vegetarian, and never had them growing up in Bogota...I do like the odd arepa though, and the only place I where I can get the frozen Don Maiz ones is in Elephant and I just cant be bothered to go all the way there, plus I dont like the area either. I would like to know more about this Mambo's place though, where abouts in Fulham is it? Are you living in London?

I have a vegetarian friend and when she goes, she eats los patacones, arepa con queso cuajado, arepa de choclo and as well as that they have nice salads and usually they have the usual lentejas, frijoles etc which you may not like but it is a veg option and healthy too?

About the arepa's why don't you buy la harina, like PAN or areparina and just grate some cheese, a bit of water or leche y sal and there you go you can either fry it or asarlo?

La Mona, I think it's probably considered upwardly mobile mostly by the estate agents trying to sell there. But it is changing rapidly and not anywhere near as bad as it was in the 80's. Cereal - the flours I mentioned are the ones from colombia that are made from corn, they are for arepa's, you can buy them in Brixton and Elephant and even in Fulham I believe...it's so easy and seen as you have la parrillita, pues hombre! Worth a try at least?

Kat - Oh I love it where you are it's beautiful, you must think London is such a dump when you come down here :-) all the pollution etc, I once stayed in a log cabin down there and I did not want to come back, whenever we go out of London when you come back in and start to see the high rise buildings and everything is grey you just get this sinking feeling...

So many colombians in London right now....if you went to la carniceria las america's on a saturday morning you would think you were in colombia!

I have a Colombian friend very near about one hour from where I live she owns a little coffe shop but i don't know any other Colombian near :( or hardly far away

I go to London about 4 times in a year but never hang around any Colombian thing. my husband said we could do that in Colombia. :S

Leeroy - I lived in Coldharbour Lane, Brixton for a bit too! Went up to London to La Mazorca a few weeks ago. Food not all that but go for the dancing. I prefer the little market in Seven Sisters to the Elephant (aesthetic reasons really). One of my friends (English) who came to La Mazorca had travelled round Colombia but has essentially lived a very upper middle class life so I didn't tell her about the drunk guy at the bar with a gun tucked into his trousers (and who indicated in a drunken way if I wanted to dance with him). Me hize la loca.When we got back to her flat my husband mentioned it and she said if she'd known she would have left. Was that the real flavour of Colombia or was it just Brixton? Dunno.I believe the only police who carry guns are in Heathrow airport and some parts of Manchester though I think Nottingham is one of the most dangerous cities in the UK.

Re Police in guns in Britain: Don't forget the armed response units. I witnessed a shooting in Woolwich once and I was the one who dialled 999. Within five minutes there was about 15 armed coppers on the scene. It was like the Sweeney.

btw My wife prefers the Seven Sisters market as well.

La Mazorca could never quite pull it off when ever I went there,either the food was bad and the service was good or the service was bad and the food good.
Kalder,Woolwich has been going downhill for many a year,a shame.
