Lodging in Madrid one night.

I work and live in Pereira, Colombia. But this week I am in Sweden to visit my family. I am going back the 7th of july, but has to stay one night in Madrid. It was the same when I went here, so I tried to find a very cheap place as I only went there for sleep. I found a good, safe and pretty cheap place downtown. I payed 38 euro, which was very fair..BUT..the taxi there charged me 30 euro as well as 30 back. So I ended up with almost 100 euro - just for one night sleep!
So - please - can anyone recommend me something fair priced cloiser to the airport - I mean, transport there and back totally cost lower than I experienced last thursday?! Thanks in advance..

take the subway next time to wherever you're going - taxi's in europe are too expensive and their bus/rail systems are very good!

What gimmedub said. Use the metro system to get to Lavapies, La Latina, Puerta del Sol. Lots of cheap places. I normally pay about Euros 30 for my own room.

Thanks, I´ll try the metro next week. I was iving downtown at Atocha (is it correct spelled?). How long time will the transport there from the airport take, more or less?

Give yourself an hour from Atocha, a bit more if it's during peak hours. Plan your route in advance as you will have to change 2 or 3 times. Make sure you get off at Barajas (airport) and not Barajas, if you know what I mean! There's a one Euro supplement to pay on entering and leaving the metro stop.
