You will be drastically readjusting your Life/Living Style from what a MT in the States is accustomed to,,,It may support you but by Colombian MT standards. Quite a Change indeed,,,

I don't know but I can't picture seeing many Colombians lining up to pay $25k or even $20k on a massage. Maybe I'm naive or too "unrefined" but I just don't see it.

I do have a friend who`s a profesional massage therapist (works where you work Vic) and she`s doing fine. But again, she went 4 years to college for that...

Do you do "extras"? If you do, I might be up for a full-body massage. ;-)

My wife has two professional massage therapist she will call on when she is in Bogotá. Which one depends mainly on schedule.

They depend heavily on referrals and are reluctant to take on clients without such. Both of them are on referral from several hospitals and clinics. Obviously, this work involves many patients with cosmetic operations.

These people work hard coming all times of the day and often late in the evening. They are trained legitimate therapist and not in the sex trade. I would not dare to even suggest anything off base with either of them!

I would venture to say that your success in your professional arena may depend on which class of clients you are able to sell your service. Are you a blond haired, blue eyed gringa? If so, you could target high class women with money and a need for your services. Anything less than that from a gringa massage therapist in Colombia would be kind of wierd.

aztec says on Feb 6, 2008, 18:29:

As suggested by dwr you will need to cultivate a client base consisting of people who can afford your service.

Hospitals and clinics are an obvious target. A single client from one of the clubs can help. Word of mouth can spread among the various social clubs and Country Clubs. It helps if you are bilingual.

Unless you can gain those types of contacts you will not make it in Colombia. Most of the residents there simply can't afford this luxury.

I think Aztec and others nailed it. Basically, for a long time, you probably won't be able to make a living at it. You will have to build up a client base, and that could take years. You would have one advantage, and that is the novelty factor of being a gringa. I went to a beauty school once so my wife could get her hair colored. As I sat and waited, the girls working on the men's haircut side of the school were almost fighting over cutting my hair. So I imagine over time, as word spreads that you are a MT and a gringa, there will be new clients that might want to try you out because of the novelty of being worked on by a foreigner.
