living in cartegena? Hey Bob, I really think you should stay where you are. Either this question is a sic joke or you really should read much more about latin america. I use to be like you, rich and dumb or was it dumb and rich? Have a great time, and, oh, before you go contact me about a couple of puentes that I could sell you. You sound like the tipical northamerican or The Ugly American---- read the book and do not give the gringos a worst reputation than we have.

Bob, try this http://mdb.eluniversal.com.co/content/asp/clasificados/clasifica_dos.asp

this is the classified section of "El Universal" the newspaper in
Cartagena dealing with rental and property for sale in Cartagena. Since you were/are living in the DR I assume your Spanish is good enough to negotiate the lisings. Cartagena is a great place, had a condo in the Manga section but sold several years ago, a little too hot and humid for my taste. Medellin? Ah. a bird of another color.

Good luck,

Gator

Cartagen Apartment 2003 Don't know what prices are now,, expect them to be the same or even less. This is a link to a unit I looked at last year.

Heard on the news today that three "gringos" living in their Cartagena highrise apartment were murdered. Didn't catch all the details on TV. Seems the security people at the building and their maid gave some guerrillas information about them, when they were home, work etc. Not sure why they killed them,, maybe they didn't have any money or refused to pay ??

reply to tinto Please forgive me sir, I was not jumping over him in a disrespectable manner. We must understand that there are many gringos who have an attitude that money makes a person. Wrong. The Latin American People I found were very rich in the things that really matter. If and when you have financial wealth, perhaps you will understand what I am refering to. With respect to chasing 17 year old girls, statement, I never mentioned anything about chasing women. Experience. Sir, when a gentelman has liquid wealth he does not chase anything, it comes to him, opportunities are everywhere, be advised, 1. A quality person does not take advantage of anyone, at anytime, anywhere. Since you mentioned poor 17 year old girls, what do they know? Matter of fact, most people under 35 do not know much. Do you really think when you are twice your age, you will look back and say that you were really intelligent, with wisdom? Sir, I have no idea how much experience you have in this life or how much you have travelled, or where you have been. I can state from experience, I do not care to associate with northamericans when I am a guest in another country, I am there for what I can learn and therefore become a richer person. Northamericans are overly demanding. I sincerely suggest that you read the book The Ugly American. I do not recall the author, berhaps it was written 35-40 years ago yes we have changed, and not for the better. I married a Colombian woman about three years ago, she is a little younger than I, matter of fact, she was not 17 she was 36 with two children ages 5 and 11. She is the type of woman that use to be here in the U.S. I am proud to be an American, I served in our military and vote in every election, it is my duty and responsibility. The woman I married came as a package. ie. her children were included. Please be advised: All of the Latin American Countries will continue to feed on the bottom until they understand what causes their problems and then correct those problems, each latin american country has its problems but, the attitude of the men must change if those countries are going to join the world leading countries on an equal basis. Do not hold your breath, mabey in 50 years. The women and men want a better life, dont you? Only the women have a chance of the opportunity, ie their inner beauty, love of the family, her outter beauty is usually the envy of northamerican men, because she is my wife and respects her man because I do not lie, cheat, steal, etc. etc.

Response to jaguarbob Bob you did not upset me, I was not angry, sorry sir the gringos give themselves a bad reputation, were you aware that Californians are disliked in Oregon? Many Californians behave badly in Oregon because of their superior attitude, which is uncalled for anywhere.Be your best and have a wonderful time and enjoy this life

poco, where did you see or hear this? Twelve soldiers from the 9th Brigade and four guerillas died in a firefight in Santa Maria, 350 kilometers (220 miles) south of Bogota, AFP said. In Neiva, east of Cali, FARC (?)blew up an apartment building entrance and kidnapped three people. Caught this on Radio Caracol but was really only listening with half and ear-no mention of Gringos. The President sacked several high ranking police and army officers as a result.

Cartagena Murders Litost:

I agree,, the news about the murders should be all over "everywhere". This is not "usual". I saw it on the Spanish news, here in Colombia. I looked up at the TV when they showed a picture of the "destroyed" front door of the apartment. Goes to show,,, steel is better. Anyway, I asked another person who was watching. Well,,, just asked again, the persons were NOT from Colombia and NOT from an English speaking country,, maybe Mexico, Spain,, etc. Sorry,, thought I was posting correctly. Hummmm maybe the murders of Non Gringo is NOT news. :)

Thought I'd add this,,, I've known of too many persons who employed "domestic help" who have had problems. The maid steals, quits, tells others of your activities, etc. Payment for information from these people is "cheap". Easy to "sell out". An acquaintence in Venzeula had his maid leave after three years,, taking a large amount of his belongings. He was not happy but seemed to consider this as the way things are.

the murders in Cartagena are a lie It isnt over the news, check El Tiempo and find that. Please be serious with such a negative information. The appartments that are all over the news are in Neiva, pretty south and near of the area that Pastrana gave to the gerrilla to negociate.

what do you need a maid for anyway there is no need for people to have a maid anyway, surely they can clean up their own mess. these women have lots of children to feed, do you think they do it because they want to and are bad people?? They're desperate, look at their miserable wages.

People to asmith,
I just wanted to point out that people are people, and that there is no difference between someone from Oregon or California, or Colombia, and it's a shame that you're not interested in meeting someone just cos they're from a particular place. How can you justify saying that North Americans (I assume you mean the US) are "overly demanding"? Surely that's a lot of people..

Desideria (Moderator) says on Feb 28, 2004, 00:47:

why to have a maid and/or why not Sure, everybody can clean up their own messes, but why should you if you can pay somebody else for doing it? And at the same time giving lawful employment to somebody who badly needs it? Yes, their wages are miserable, but if you tally eveything up you'll find out that and average live-in maid can probably save more money from her miserably salary than a girl working at the shoe store at the mall getting a minimum wage (what was it now? 350 000 pesos?) a month, having to pay for her own lunch, transportation, dress smartly, have fashionable shoes, make-up...such.
And for yourself...if you're young and single, there's no problem cleaning after yourself. The picture changes when you have a job, a family, a house to take care of and not all the modern conveniences you were used to living in Europe. Security becomes an issue too. You don't want to leave your house alone, mopping the floors and doing laundry every day is hard work if you have a demanding full time employment outside of the home. Throw in a part-time study too into that equation and a couple of small children, and you'll be greatful to have a maid, part-time, live-in, whatever to come in and help you with the chores.
