It depends on how much money you'll spend on her and her family.
It depends on what kind of life you want to do.
It depends on where you'll live in Barranquilla.
Can live between 1 year and 1 month... Good luck, you'll need it!

figure bare minimum of 1.000.000 pesos a month living in a #3 barrio if you live in a better barrio it will cost you more a month.my advice is go spend time with her in august see how you like it there.I say this because Barraquilla is very hot and tends to be humid year round. You didn't say when she finishes her studies. December 2007 or December 2008?.

You say you have a girlfriend who lives here, she is studying to be a lawyer so I assume she is not stupid. You also posted that you have visited here, so you should have some idea of how Colombia works.

The reason I asked if this was a joke is because WHY would you being asking strangers generalized questions that we cant answer with any degree of accuracy given all the variables when you posted that you talk to here 2'3 hours every day. SHE WILL HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS TO YOUR QUESTIONS WITH ALL THE SPECIFICS YOU NEED FOR YOUR SITUATION.

Josh, you're correct that a special tourist visa (by "special" I mean involving an application, a fee, review and approval) is not needed to enter Colombia, but what the poster above is telling you is also correct: You can't stay one year in Colombia as a tourist. I believe the maximum is 180 days in a 12 month period.

I think it's easy to live there for six months but beyond that you either need to:

1. go home
2. get a student visa, business visa or some other type of visa that permits extended stays
3. overstay your visa and take your chances (and pay a big fine) when you finally depart. I don't think they'll throw you in jail, but they could probably deny you re-entry for x number of years.

You will be fine in Barranquilla as long as:

you don´t mind sweating a bit now and then
you like vallenato and salsa.
you can dance ( to the above music)
you can drink rum and whisky
you enjoy crazy bus rides with pissed off driver.

ENJOY

I thought it was that you can only stay for 180 days in any 12-month period...therefore you cannot just go out and come back in after six months. Maybe some of the others can clarify this.

Okay, first let me say you are takin a risk, but life is about risk. You can stay in Colombia longer if you buy an extension on your visa. I forget what it is called but you can get an extension. You can forget about finding work with a company in Colombia, and the paper work is crazy. You can always work as a English teacher in a private school. My advice, go with your gut and you will be okay. Good luck and enjoy the festivels in Jan. I have a friend there and if you ever need any help with anything, i am sure she will help you.
