Life in Cartagena

Hola/Hello .... everyone. I am interested in learning more about regular life in Cartagena. I moved here last weekend and I am curious about everything. I was living in Manizales prior to this.

Any suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated. I haven't been out much yet, but I have noticed that taxis don't use meters here. Any suggestions on job hunting would be nice too.

Hey Thomas,

What would you like to know? I might be able to answer a few questions for you as I've been a few times. Just curious, what kind of job are you looking for?

Seems strange to me that somebody would like Barranquilla more than Cartagena.

But to each their own I guess.

Hello Babygirl,
I have been working as an English teacher here for the last two and a half years.... but I am open to anything when it comes to job hunting.

I am interested in knowing if there are nice places to go that aren't really tourist sites. I have heard about the Chilean tall ship that will be here. If I can make it over.... I'll take some pictures for sure... Good restaurants that are a bit more economical would be nice. I'm still getting used the the cost of living being much more here than in Manizales.

Well good luck with the job search. I have a feeling your best bet is going to continue with the English teaching. I do know that there are TONS of schools with English programs in Cartagena. I think the kids go back to school next week (sorry not too sure about that). As far as non-touristy things to do or economical restaurants? I found everything pretty expensive and touristy unless I got out of centro and in to the suburbs / barrios. (had way more fun that way too). In centro, my favourite place for a beer is Donde Fidel (I love salsa music and great atmosphere). I don't have a favourite restaurant, well because I'm picky. There's a cool vegetarian lunch place called Girasoles that was dirt cheap and good food (not deep fried).

Are you looking for day trips? Beaches? Party?

Hi Babygirl,
Thanks again for the postings. I am not really looking for parties so much... but nice quiet beaches would be good. We went to two different beaches this last weekend. The first was down by the Hilton Hotel... I thought it was rather dirty, etc. Not the nicest beach that I've been to. I don't remember the name of the second beach (but it's very popular and out by the airport). It was much nicer.

I found a list of colegios on-line here for Cartagena. I'll start with them for looking for work... I wrote to one last week and they responded back (... thanks for the interest, but we aren't looking for teachers at this time). I would guess that the kids are back in school by now... the pool in our conjunto was rather empty today. :-)

I found all the beaches in the immediate area really gross and dirty. My favourite would be Playa Blanca (you'll have to take a boat or bus), it's so much prettier, cleaner and more Caribbean. :) My opinion is skip Isla de Rosarios, (at least skip the tacky tours). A total waste of time and money IMO. I know you can boat to other islands but I haven't done it.

RE: the teaching, well at least they actually responded! haha. :)
