licence question

Hello all,
We just bought a car (registered in her name) I have a valid California drivers licence, I've read here that it will work in Colombia, then I've heard that I need a International licence. You cannot get a int. licence here in Colombia, I'm going to trt to get one in Ecuador.....Does anyone know for sure what the status on a licence is?
I'm also going to the Colombian consulate in Ecuador to apply for a extjenero cedula as the people at DAS here in Medellin said it would be easier to get one in Ecuador? any comments on that?

Don't know about the car and license, but the question about the Cedula de Extranjeria sounds a little weird. There's no need to go to another country to do that. I'm not even sure if you can get a Cedula de Extranjeria in another country. The cedula is a fast and easy (how do you say "tramite" in English?), anyway; no questions asked. All you have to do is fill out an application and give them copies of your visa and passport, two photos and wait a week or two. And now, they don't charge for the Cedula.

I used my US drivers license, and they liked it fine... Scroll to 4th pic & see me and my car's safety check.

license and cedula You can use your US license, you can get an international license, but I have never bothered, I have bben stopped a few times, and they have never given me any trouble.
You do not need to go out of the country to get the cedula, that info was just 'let's mess with the gringo today'. You do it with the Ministerio de Relaciones Exteriores in Bogota. If you need more help on that let me know.
thanks

technically you need an international license which you need to obtain in the country/province/state in which the youor orginial license was issued....the international license really is only a translation of the license and describes what the heading/layout means in different language.... so basically a police officer can follow the international license translate and then verify on your real license your information that he is looking for.....basically its a guide for the police man....this international license is only good for one year from date of issue....I have heard people get away with out one especially here in Colombia ...if you run into not to serious trouble just slip the officer 10,000 and you will be eon your way
