How come you don't have any dirty words in there? I think Elmo needs to make some additions to the dictionary.

Rubiazo says on Jun 18, 2005, 17:33:

I'll start Verga- penis
Pichirilo- penis
Cuca- vagina
Gallo- vagina
Follar- to fuck
El Beso Negro- tossing salad (if you have to ask, you probably don't wanna know!!)

BTW 'verraco' should be spelled 'berraco'

Also BTW I don't know what the criteria for these words are, whether they can be words in use in COL as well as other places or terms specific to part or all of that country.

rubiazo follar isn't that common here in colombia, we'll say things like "tirar" "pichar" "culiar" and even "jopiar", and verraco IS spelled with a v, not a b.
other words I'd add are jopo, bacano, corroncho, coral, arrabal, cacreco, pirobo, cacorro, cigarron... I could go on forever.

When I first got to Medellin my Colombian friends taught me... to say things. They said I should use a loud voice. Walking down Junin they urged me to say what they had taught me and since they were only meaningless sounds to me and I had no idea what I was saying, I happily obliged by saying out loud: CARA DE CHIMBA! Gotta love that Paisa sense of humor!

Rubiazo says on Jun 18, 2005, 20:34:

carolain EVERYBODY i know in Bogota says 'follar'. Maybe its different from region to region. I only learned that word from Colombians, although I know they use it in other countries too.
Here they say 'cingar', 'rapar', 'arrancar', 'chillar' etc.
We definitely say 'bacano' here. I think that one goes all over Latin America because they even use it in Brazil!

quindioman says on Jun 19, 2005, 06:11:

carolain that's very colourful language there girl :p
Ok....i think most of the words would apply to the whole of Colombia, but there are some that only apply to the regions....reading through the list above gave me that impression.
I'm from Armenia and we use a lot of the following :

To fuck: pichar (old school) culiar, comer, clavar (these could all be treated as verbs)
words to describe the male genitalia: chimbo, verga
female genitalia: cuca, pan, panocho
words to insult : pirobo, marica, maricon, hijueputa, anything that can be prefixed with care (as pointed out in Platano's post above)...eg careculo, caremierda
huevon (someone that's not really on the ball).
a note on HP (hijueputa) very often can be prefixed with doble, triple or even catre....eg. este doblehijueputa se parcho mi novia
a nice word that will come in handy in Colombia.....la ginda....which doesn't translate to any word in english but it's the word to use when a female starts showing a bit of flesh .i.e she might be showing a bit of her beaver (intentionally/unintentionally).......as in "huuuuy parce asomese por la terrasa que Ximena esta dando la ginda"
FOLLAR....i personally have never heard anyone of my friends or anyone else in colombia use this word.
A note on chimbo/chimba......in my part of Colombia there is a BIG DIFFERENCE between the two
CHIMBO: vulgar word for penis, also something that is dud or of poor quality
CHIMBA: vulgar word for something that was very very good...eg....ese paseo fue una chimba....colombia es una chimba parce
MAMAR GALLO....to take the piss/wind up someone
that's it for now....i'm starting to feel guilty....better do some work like i'm paid to instead of showing people have corrupt i am

I find one of the problems, maybe the central problem, with Spanish is the absence of a word similar to the English fuck. You can go anywhere in the English speaking world and use that word in its various meanings. No matter where you are, you can say "Fuck off" or "Let's fuck", and people will know what you mean. In the Spanish speaking world they use different words depending on the region or country and it's just not the same.

My wife says that "follar" is not much used in Colombia. She says that the word should be "panocha". She's never heard of "pan" as a vularity for vagina.

Arepa! That was one of the first Colombian words I learned!
comearepas= lesbian :)
Just got off the phone with my novia. For her a 'cuero' is an ugly person, NOT a puta. In Caribbean Spanish, 'cuero' is synonymous with 'puta', however. In Mexico a 'cuero' is what we'd call a 'tigre' or 'tigrazo' here, like a tough guy, a roughneck, a hardcore nigga on the real tip.
Also in Rolo country, they use 'marica' or 'chino, chinito, chinitico' etc. in salutation the same way somebody here would say 'whats up nigga' or 'whats up maphuqa' 'whats up SON', 'whats up KID' etc.
It usually comes out like 'kiuvo marIK' :P AFAIK it is used for both males and females.
She did say 'follar' is not necessarily that common there. She just tries not to be a ñera :)
I've heard 'panocha' too, mostly from Mexicans. But it's understood everywhere. Here they also say chocha, toto, crinca, crica, popola, papaya.
Also, 'grandulón' or 'cabezón' for 'retard'.

Cockney Colombian says on Jun 20, 2005, 00:58:

Unfortunatly my Spanish is appalling, much to the frustration of my Spanish girlfriend.

When I do try to communicate with her in Spanish I've already encountered the difference between the limited Spanish I've picked up in Colombia and European Spanish. Of course it could just be my ignorance of the language.

She notes that I tend to use the more formal Usted than Tu, but notes that her Argentinian and Ecuadorian flatmates also do that implying it is characteristic of Latin American spanish.

Several times I've got blank looks when using words which must be slang, or must be that I've misremembered them

I apologise if the spellings aren't correct but off the top of my head words I can think of are:

Cachitona: Cutie
Cascatcha: Urchin
Chucha: Body Odour
Pequeca: Smelly feet!
Popocho: Short and fat

If I've used any of those words incorrectly I'm happy to be corrected.

There are also phrases which the meaning is different. In Colombia I've heard the expression "She's fond of her soup" to describe someone who has a little weight on them. The Spanish equivilent is "She likes her chicken." I've also heard people say "You use to much shampoo" and accompany that with the swirling "loco" gesture beside the head.

The beauty of slang in any language is it's regional differences. My girlfriend and I work in the same place (Although in different departments) and there are plenty of Spaniards, and even to someone not fluent in the language I can tell there is a difference from her Spanish via Madrid, than those from Vallenica or Sevilla

My fiancee uses Joda for fuck, and jodido for fucking, but I think she might have started that from listening to me use fuck in english. I've noticed that the word "puto" gets used in place of fucking, as in "that fucking idiot" would be "ese puto idiota" or something like that. Also, the "v" in spanish is often pronounced as a "b".

How can you tell the difference between tirar (as a palobrota) and tirar meaning "to throw"? I still think Spanish needs a good-old fashioned word like fuck that is understood across all countries speaking the same language. In Mexico it's joder, in Spain follar, somewhere else it's something else. You can say fuck in the US, Canada, NZ, the UK, Ireland and Australia and everyone knows what you mean and uses the same word. It's the one unifying force in the English language.

Yes it can be used as an endearing term.

So how do I call someone a fag because I want to insult them?
Simple....with a frown on your face simply look at the target and say "MARICA", although "PIROVO" or "GEY" are just as effective.

Andeniado.

Taken from Bogotanismos most words are used as well in other cities of Colombia

Beso que parece en la mejilla, pero que se da en la comisura de la boca. Utilizado mucho en primeras citas y amorios secretos. Si las condiciones son adecuadas, puede desembocar en rumbeo. En la pronunciación bogotana es muy común omitir la segunda dé ("beso andeniao").

(y) i believe that is the most acurrate translation, ever.

anyways, if you really are into trash-talking, you know spanish, and you happen to be in colombia.. it will come out naturaly. seriously.

all you need to know is that there is a lot of euphemisms you can use, insulting is all about contexts and finding the right weakness to pick on.

and regarding the local slang.. pretty simple.. just add some spice to your mind.. play with the words.

by the way, nothing like colombian weed.

been away for a long time Ok, it's been 24 years since I was in Colombia but my family uses the following phrases regularly:

Estoy mamada! (especially those with children under the age of 5)
[El que] No llora, no mama.

Neither of which I wouldn't dare say in my Puerto Rican novio's mother's house.

and the word I learned for condoms was llantas, not gomas like most of the latinos I know in the states.

Verraco - Berraco Lenguaje coloquial: berraco o verraco

El Nuevo Diccionario de Americanismos (tomo I - Colombianismos) del Instituto Caro y Cuervo define:

berraco - verraco

verraco:

I was born in Colombia but came to England when I was 12 years old, so a lot of the swear words/slang on this page is completely alien to me whereas others are very familiar!!! I have had a good laugh sitting at my desk reading through them all whilts thinking what a wonderful language we have!
