Lets Talk Music

Just wondering what you guys have for favorite artists, songs, styles......I love music of all kinds so it is always interesting to hear what other people have to say.

BTW anyone looking for a good radio station type web site with all types of latin music go to www.batanga.com you can listen to each style by itself.

Shortiao surely must be British to appreciate such a classic band.
Apart from Silvio Rodriguez, Mercedes Sosa and a handfull of other artists, I really find getting into Latin music very difficult; must be my age and I am set in my ways obviously!
Latins really can not rock as effectively as the Brits, in my opinion. That is enough because I know that I will get slaughtered on this site!!

I think I'm the same kenblan.

For the first month here , it was the romance period and i could listen to reggaeton and that other shite they call music.

Now, it grinds away at me....

I have not been slated yet, so here goes by "eras"
60's-Stones, Beatles, Jefferson Airplane, Cream, Hendrix,Small Faces, Moby Grape, Animals, Pink Floyd, Crosby Stills Nash, Neil Young, Free, MC5, Traffic, Santana, Taste, Chicken Shack, Janis Joplin, Dylan, Butterfield Blues Band, Fairport Convention, Joe Cocker, Nick Drake, Spooky Tooth, Doors, -among my primary education.
70's and 80's-Clapton, Bowie, Rory Gallagher, Clash, Tim Buckley, Jam, Doll by Doll, Zeppelin, Allman Bros, Bunneymen, Julian Cope,Joy Division, Smiths, Bad Company,U2, too many to list!
90's onwards-Jeff Buckley, Oasis, Stone Roses, Verve, Ian McNabb, Del Amitri, Robert Plant, Paul Rodgers, Crowded House, too many again to list.
Mixed in with Buddy Guy, Junior Wells, Howlin Wolf, Stevie Ray Vaughan, BB, Albert and Freddie King, Albert Collins, Little Milton, Bobby Bland, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Junior Walker, Bob Marley, Jonny Lang, John Mayall, loads of black American music generally! Miles Davis, Mingus, John Coltrane, Jan Garbarek, ECM label jazz generally and Stax Soul!
With that lot 50 times over in diversity, how could I ever feel great passion about the majority of the Latin music, particularly the commercial stuff? I think I have enough to keep me going and even my Colombian wife likes some of it! Bet you all think I am really ancient with that list! Still young enough to enjoy most of the above and my search continues even now for new things but being here, it is really difficult to keep up with most of the things that go on in Brit/American contemporary music!

you're a Del Amitri fan?

I used to see the lead singer all the time on the subway in Glasgow. Never a fan of his music though.....what was his name again? Del? or Rod?

Shortiao, think the singer was Justin Currie. Never a great fan of theirs in terms of records but they cooked live, especially in smaller venues.
If you spent time in Glasgow, then do you know of Doll By Doll or their Scottish singer, Jackie Leven-great in their respective primes-REAL PASSION!!

Justin...thats him...and his sideburns.

I have to plead ignorance to Dol by Doll....worth checking out?

Best venue in Glasgow was...and probably still is King Tuts Wah wah Hut....I seen Oasis there in 92 when they werent bigger than God.....what a great show! Ahh...such great memories...cannae wait to get beack to it!

saying that...its probably shite these days

back in the late summer of '64, there was a free concert at muir beach, on the sausalito side of the GG bridge (san francisco) greatful dead, airplane, steppenwolf, quicksilver, big brother and janice, joy of cooking, hot tuna and several more. about 1400-1500 people turned out.

it wasn't long before the bands just started all playing together. all these great musicians jammin at once..incredible.

then folks started walking around with bowls of sandoz acid, passin it out free. everyone got high, even the children. and it wasn't long after that, that the clothes started comin off. soon, there were over a thousand naked freaks running around--men, women, children and dogs--it was the most incredible show i've ever been to.

about 4, maybe 4:30 in the afternoon, the highway patrol showed up, about 10 cars, and on their bull horns told everyone that they had 10 minutes to get the hell outta there. it really turned into a freak show then. everyone naked, stoned on acid, running around in circles, not knowing which way was up/down, who they were, how they got there, what to do next, where they had dropped their clothes, and the goon squad screaming at everyone on their load speakers, band members and kitchen folks trying to gather stuff up and absolutely no one with a clue where to turn.

we had just come back from mexico and were in a acid painted vw bus. there were 4-5 of us when we arrived, 14 piled in to get the hell outta there, most with next to nothing or nothing on. everyone high as a kite. imagine droppin folks off in sausalito naked. some went with us to san francisco...when we got to henry street--mouse studios--at least i knew someone there and had a place to re coup. the rest, they were on their own.

oh! the '60's
