legalizing drugs...In mexico..

Is the US next??? Nothing will piss off Uncle Sam like having neighbors(CAD/MEX) allowing legal consumption of drugs. Because it's much easier/closer for americans to visit CAD/MEX, than it is to visit Amsterdam.

Is personal drug use still illegal in COL? I thought it was decriminalized for a while then criminalize again.

NOT legal in Canada they had toyed with it but it didnt pass muster. Too bad. It is tolerated but still illegal everywhere in Canada.
It is still legal in Colombia and hopefully will remain that way.

It is still legal in Colombia But Alvarito will change that in a New York Minute after he is re-elected, and has gone on record to do so.

Bummer Rubito, estamos jodidos.

That's not REAL legalization though Just decriminalization of possession up to a certain amount and under certain circumstances. Basically just like in Colombia.

Big difference. That's not real legalization of possesssion, let alone of the drug trade as a whole. It's far from a real solution, though it's definitely better than full criminalization.

And by the way, "Alvarito" here was forced to tone down his proposal rather quickly (down to seeking "non-jail" forms of punishment), so I wouldn't be so quick to bet that he'd easily be able to radically change things. That and the fact that it could well be unconstitutional, considering that the original decriminalization was a constitutional court ruling.

I personally could care less, since I don't intend to use any of these substances, but I do know that keeping the drug trade illegal is the real source of the problem, not merely drug possession.

Exactly how I feel I don't smoke much anymore because it really doesnt jive with my current lifestyle, but I care about others' right to do it.

As far as I know the legalization policiy has been dropped in the Netherlands. Too many germans where coming over the boarder to by dope.

Side note. Drugs have never been legal in The Netherlands, but the personal consumption of softdrugs (marihuana, hash) is "permitted" in the so-called coffeeshops. There's a discouragement policy by our centre-right government at the moment, the current shops may still exist, but any non-compliance with existing rules, presence of a minor, etc. will lead to permanent closure.
In the South near the border they're talking about a nationals-only system to discourage German/Belgian drugtourism, but it hasn't been implemented yet.
The production of marihuana is illegal and the dismanteling of those "appartment greenhouses" has been given top priority because of nuisance, illegal tapping of electricty and making appartments inhabitable because of the made adjustments.

true.. MEX is only talking about allowing personal stash, but not the trade/sale of it. One interesting thing about the article is that, while MEX is view as a transit point for drugs to US. They're starting to get more home-grown users.

It'll be interesting to see if this story gains traction in the US.

Update on the story.. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12535896/

Interestingly, this story is developing very quietly, looks like neither Mex nor US wants to generate publicity for this.
