Legalize Child Abandonment in Colombia

In the next few days El Congreso will begin to discuss the proposed Moisés law which would allow women to abandon children up to three months old with hospitals, police stations and churches etc. where the children will enter the adoption system, without it being a crime that results in a six year jail sentence for the mother as is currently the law. Last year 890 babies were abandoned in the streets, garbage receptacles and where ever in Colombia. I think this is a wonderfully humane proposal in a country where every other fourteen or fifteen year old girl from Siloé, El Distrito and so and so on is “with child” and has a snowball´s chance in hell of rearing it to be anything more than a short-lived glue sniffer.

Lets hope they state an age range, unlike that mid-west US state which did not and some yahoo dropped all his 6 children off to the state, ranging from very young to almost 18 years of age.....idiots.

Miguel,

I would rather be in a US orphanage than a Colombian one.

That's just so sad when I think about all the people I know that can't conceive.

In Canada if your child goes in to "care", they do their best to make you financially accountable. Is it the same in the States?

Oh sorry, "in care" means foster care or I think they call it a "ward of the crown".
