Leaving mid-way through flight question for airport experts

Hi all,

I bought a ticket that goes to Bogotá, stops 12 hours then goes on to Cali. Can I just walk out at Bogotá, stay in Bogotá, then when the returning flight comes back a month later, board that flight at Bogotá? Basically, throw out one leg of the journey to Cali.
Thanks.

You need to check with your carrier to determine if a "stopover"is authorized. If it is and a stopover is allowed you are good to go. One caveat-must be the same airline but call first.

People used to do that in the US, because it was cheaper sometimes. Then the airlines caught on and if you didn't get on the second leg, the ticket was cancelled.

Post 9/11 airlines may get suspicious if you get off the flight. If the flight to Cali was cheaper than the flight to Bogota, they are probably not going to let you use that loophole. If the flight to Bogota was cheaper, they won't care but you should probably just change the ticket to Bogota to avoid any trouble.

They will cancel the rest of your flight. You will not get a refund.

I did a stopover in 2006. I bought a ticket from Miami to Bogota with a layover in Medellin with Bogota as the final destination. It was through Avianca and I stayed a week in Medellin. However, as Gator said, it was arranged when I bought the ticket.

The only time I've ever done this is on the return leg (i.e., got off in Houston and didn't continue to San Antonio). At that point, there's nothing for for the airline to cancel.

Even if they didn't cancel the rest of the flight, they certainly wouldn't let you originate your return flight from Bogota instead of Cali.

What about your bags? If it is just a stopover, with your bags checked thru.

All airline data systems are interlinked. I took a flight from there in mid January with a stop over in Barranquilla then a 12 hour layover in NYC. Avianca made a mistake and did not enter in their data base that I was on the flight...After checking in (This where I learned about the 2 hour advance for ck-in) with the Delta counter for my flight into Rome, it took (Happily) a very talented floor supervisor to intervene with Delta HQS and Avianca HQS to get all this straightened out and verification I was on the flight (Even with stubs), & with priority line cutting with security and a call-in to the gate, I had 2 minutes to spare....Get everything in writing from the airlines first if you try to do this...todays flying is much different.

They would probably never figure it out if you stepped off a flight at Bogota instead of continuing on to Cali. But you would definitely NEVER be allowed to board in Bogota after missing boarding in Cali for the return.

Hola!

Call Avianca and let them OK things with you! They said to me that I could take any flight from Bogota to Cali within 24 hours and it would not be an extra ticket charge, if the flights were using the same type of ticket.
