Learning Spanish in Colombia

The best way to learn a language is to speak it every day!

The best way to learn a language is to live it. And learning a language is a good excuse to get to know the local life in Colombia. Colombians are very social - you'll make heaps of friends.

Follow a course.

One way to learn a language is to follow an official course at a university or a language school. Universities are usually better - and you have the benefit of meeting lots of fellow students. They usually aren't very cheap though.

The following is a list of places that offer Spanish for foreigners. Remember, we haven't checked all these courses out! The list comes without any guarantees - you'll have to check out these places for yourself and make up your own mind!

Dates may be past by the time you read this and indicate how recent the information is.

EAFIT By Pablo, prstanley at yahoo.com 2002-04-11
Some additional information on the español para extranjeros program at EAFIT.
The program is very flexible, and the director Rosaura Gomez is extremely helpful and friendly. However, the program is not for those that want to learn quickly. Most group classes are at most 10 hours/week, and the classes are at a leisurely pace. Many students are here for amor, meaning that they met their novia/novio in their home country and are now living in Colombia with their significant other. For those of us here mainly to learn Spanish, the classes are simply not agressive enough.

The value here is not in the classes themselves, but the opportunity to meet other people and to take other classes. While a student at EAFIT, you can attend other classes for free. This is a wonderful way to practice the language (though there are some classes in English for those just beginning Spanish) and meet other Colombians. The emphasis of this program is on relationships.

Also, UPB (Universidad Pontifica Boliviana, I think), another private university in Medellin, offers individual tutoring in Spanish. That might be a better option for those that want to learn Spanish rapidly.

Learn Spanish in Bogota By Billy 2002-09-06
Here is a school that is very flexable with their schedule. However they only teach the beginning and intermediate levels of Spanish. Los Andes is another option, but they have warned me that they don't always have enough students to start the beginning level. Also, I have many friends who have studied abroad before and they all recommend a home stay. Lucero, my Spanish professor this summer was an exchange professor from Cali and she said that she regreted not opting for a home stay because it really will help you to learn much faster. Plus the Colombian people are great! I believe that both school listed will help you find a host family if you don't already have friends there.

Good school in Bogota By Glen, seapilot70 at hotmail.com 2003-03-19
Hi,
I just returned from a month in Bogota. While there I took spanish for 3 hours a day in a School called Interlingua. They are very profesional and I would highly recomend them for learning spanish. The school is in a safe location and the owner is the Consular of Australia. They can also help set you up in a place to stay while you attend classes. They are very flexible with the hours you decide to pay and intensity of learning you desire. I noticed they were not on the recomended schools page. Any one is interested thier web site is www.interlingua.com.co/espanol.htm. If you give them a call ask for Norma, she speaks good english as she is from California.

Learning Spanish in Bogota High Technology in Learning was a very good school when it cost $350 US per level (only last year). They now want $1250. US per level which is outragous for Colombia. They offer a discount if you pay online before you go if you're an international student. Don't do it because then you are trapped and out of alot of money that you could enjoy site seeing and dancing with. Its better just to go and then check it out and see what you can find. Colombian people are great and I'm sure that someone will help you find a good school for no more that $350. US per level. You can attend classes at Los Andes University (the best in Colombia) for about $300 a level.

Short Conversation Course in Bogotá (July 7th, 2005) I will teach "colombian" spanish to native english speakers staying in Bogotá, in an informal practical course (which of course will cost much less than formal theoretical academy courses).

In small groups we will practice conversation and will learn about colombian slang, frecuently used sentences and words, basic spanish to "survive" in daily conversations (social and business related).

Each course will cover other topics of interest related to: living in Colombia: colombian lifestyle, traveling in Colombia, meeting colombians, learning about Colombia and its culture, security issues, tips to "survive" in the streets (safe and non safe areas), sports, etc.... depending on the particular interest of each group of students.

At the end of the course, students will know the basics to communicate effectively with native spanish speakers in social and business environments, not only in terms of the correct words to use, but the best ways to approach, according to the culture.

For more information please email me at: clauhochman at hotmail.com

Best reagards to all!

learn Spanish in an easy, fast and efficient way if you want t come to Colombia to learn Spanish i think the best option is High Technology in learning. I dont know why does Billy talks so bad about this place i would love to know it but from my experience i can say i had a great time and i learnt a lot. I took French with them last november until december, and by now i can write, read and speak in a very fluent way. Billy is right that there are a lot of other schools which can give u better prices but the dont give u the results you expect. And well it may be right that los Andes give u a course for $300 US but that is only for one month, while HTL offers u a basic course for 3 months, and they also offer u an intensive course which is less expensive and u can learn the basis in only ne week. I can also asure u that in HTL u are going to have a great time, u are ging to enjoy yourself meeting a lot of different people, and the classes offer u different kinds of fieldtrips without an extra charge which include museums, parks, and stuff like that. So if u are interested u can write me and i can give u more info or u can go to the site www.htl-online.com

Info about Colombian guys Hi, it was really nice to read that commentary you wrote about colombian guys. I am from Colombia and I really feel good to find that people from other countries have such a good opinion about us. Anyhow, I can tell you just a little bit more about us. We like dancing, we are romantic and tender, and sometimes we are spoiled; We are hard working people and we are always trying to make Colombia a better place to live despite the bad image we have around the world because of the drugs. Now, if you really wanna keep this guy, just be your self and tell him some words in Spanish like "me gusta mucho hablar contigo"
Have a nice day and good luck.

P.D: As for the things the other guy wrote about Colombia, just do not pay attention. You know there are always good and bad experiences, but most of the times they are good if you want to go to Colombia some day.

Sorry about your experience Hi, I am new on the list and, with great surprise, I found what you wrote about Colombian courses. I am from Colombia and what I can say is that probably you are one the few people who unfortunately had a bad experience in Colombia, but I can assure you that it was just because you did not get the right information before going there. Actually, I do not get that thing about the Nazy war criminals. I mean, where were you at? For sure you were not in a University like La Javeriana, Los Andes, La Nacional, o El Externado. And by the way, I am a Languages student, this is my second time in the USA, and let me tell you that this one has been a terrible experience for me, but even though I do not blame it on American people, but on me because I did not get to the right place. I did not look for further information before coming to SC. Probably that is what happened to you when you went to Colombia.
Finally, one more thing. There is not way to judge if the Colombian Spanish is better or worse than the one spoken in Spain or Puerto Rico. Spanish is Spanish, but what I can tell you from my experience as a Languages student is that Colombian spanish is highly reputated because of its accuracy and clear pronunciation in comparison to the Spanish in Puerto Rico and Spain. Belive it or not!!!!

Learning Spanish There are some good resources for studying Spanish in Colombia, like the above mentioned universities, but I think it's important to know some Spanish prior to arriving. I found a very good online resource for learning conversational Spanish, and it's relatively inexpensive (www.supremespanish.com). It was a huge help, and I still use it frequently, especially before heading over to Colombia. I've been to Colombia 4 times now (Barranquilla, Bogota, Medellin and Cali), and I love the people and culture. I'm hoping to move there soon!
