Learning spanish in Cali

Hi all,

I'm going to Cali in January and have been planning to take Spanish lessons. I've found information on courses at Javeriana-Cali campus which sound quite good. I've also looked up ICESI, but I didn't find anything pertaining to Spanish lessons directly.

Does anyone know of any other schools or private institutes in Cali that offer spanish lessons? I am looking to learn more than passable spanish, I would like to get to a really good conversational level and it is quite likely that I will be in Colombia for more than a year so time is not a problem.
Also if anyone knows of anywhere towards the North, as everything seems to be in the South.

Oh yeah, and I've already looked at Berlitz, but it was just too expensive.

If anyone knows of any good courses in Cali I would be very grateful for the information!

Thanks, Em :)

Berlitz not a real answer to your question ... but I will be getting private lessons in Cali. Just go there ... you will find a willing teacher.

I had to deal with Berlitz in my job, they are overpriced for customers, and pay the lowest for whoever works for them. Result: the teachers couldn't find a better paid job because they weren't good enough. They don't give a damn in which Hispanic country you are ... to them Spanish is Spanish.

I dealt with them concerning software and website localizations/translations ... the quality they delivered was horrible. They did not pass the first level of service test at Microsoft, for example. I know many do not like MS, but they did their best to adapt Windows/Office/IE to each individual Latin American country, and did not just provide a flat Spanish version based on Spain.

Bottom line, I refuse to work for them or to learn from them.

Berlitz I agree with Lionheart.....Berlitz is way over priced!! I studied at English Net.
Telephone....6610670/6831044/6678167

I don't know why there are so many phone numbers but one of them should work. Alexander Munoz was the Academic Director and he will take good care to see that you are happy with the classes.

Adress......Avenida 5B Norte
# 20N-43

At Berlitz you will pay at least 10 times more and you won't learn any faster or better.

USC
¿How is your spanish level now? ...Did you consider USC(Universidad Santiago de Cali) also?. There are spanish for extrangers but few hours per week. Same happens in Javeriana, I guess.

what about this idea: when I lived for short time in US I found a gringa's add: "I wish to practice my spanish who wish to practice their english" . I answered this call and it was so good...for her because we talk in spanish most part of the time, she was better in spanish than me in english so we wanted to talk in the easier way.

You could take lessons and at same time practicing with someone. The gringa have learned Spanish in just three monts(!!!) when traveling to Spain. she has been graduated from Warthon when I meet her. The second time my conversational partner gringo took some good tools...this time I forced my self to talk in english for a while. It was a good experience for both parts...and for free!!

Thank you Thanks for all your advice, it is exactly the type of information I was looking for.

Yag, is that place across the road from the river? Because I remember walking past a place there that was a private institute and I thought I saw an ad for leanrning Spanish as well as English.

As for speaking in Spanish with someone, I am supposed to do that with my boyfriend....but it is hard not to 'lapse' back into English after a while, but this time I will be much more disciplined!

Thanks again, Em :) (Just over 6 weeks till I arrive! YAY)

I live in Cali every winter from December until May. If you want some conversation (English/Spanish) while you are there.........e-mail me. I sometimes crave to talk english with someone.

no pay ... I am lucky ok group ... I need to tell a bit more

My friend in cali is lawyer for criminal court, a very dangerous job. We are planning a new future together invoving international rights and visas, additionally to computer related business. So I will make her more safe in her life and help her doing something new. I will improve her English, which is already good, and teach her German, she will teach me Spanish.

She is already talking to lawyers specialized on Oz and NZ, I want to add Europe. USA is already well represented, plus I have a moral problem sending Colombian girls to the USA.

for all the other threads ... I am not the man seeking sexual fulfillment with a Colombiana ... I desire a woman who is as honest as I am. A US gal thinks of divorce before she gets married, a Colombian girl will be faithful as long as you are.

Lawyer Hey Lionheart.......I am just about like you......my girlfriend is a lawyer also and I feel the same way you do about women. However, my girlfriend is not with criminal justice........thank god! She has told me some horror stories with that. I know that is very dangerous.

She is very honest and trustworthy. I would not support her efforts if she wasn't.

Sounds great This is really good, I didn't realise there were as many people on this forum that are in Cali as opposed to Medellin or Bogota. I knew that Adela was and Desi, but that is all.

I was in Cali for 6 months from August last year till March this year, and I am very much looking forward to heading back. One of the main reasons why I have been looking at learning in a university is the opportunity to meet some people because last time the only social network that I had was the people that my boyfriend worked with and I never became particularly close with them.

Also, maybe Law is very popular, my boyfriends sister is also a lawyer, but specialising in Labour Law...but then it is probably more of a coincidence really!

In the North End let me suggest Cristina Montero Pearson a very nice lady who speaks English like someone from Conneticut and perfect caleño Spanish. She offers private tutoring in La Flora. You can contact her at: sittingroom2 at hotmail.com

Emily Hi

It would be great if you could post comments about your experiences with language schools after you arrive in Cali, as I will also be attending spanish school in Cali. But I will not be arriving until June.

If you are still there, which I am sure you will be, it would be great to meet up with you. Being from Sydney, I am sure we will have lots to chat about, in spanish of course! ja ja

But seriously, I will know only a handle full of people living Cali (around 5 of my friends from Uni live in Cali). But they will all be working, hopefully!

So I will have plenty of time free.
