Medellin, the City of Eternal Spring, is a beautiful and easily worthwhile destination for all of those who visit. While the tour books may help you navigate the surface of the city and its famous sites, it truly is diffcult to appreciate the complex identity of the region and its people without the help of a knowledgeable local guide. I, myself, came to the city as a backpacker and, although outsiders can get a good ways into the culture of Medellin on their own, it really takes the association with a local to get to the core of things. Born and raised in the most conflict ridden corners of Medellin, experiencing the trials and triumphs of this city, Maria Elena is well suited to be that guide. She can take you to the main sites of interest in the Centro as well as introduce you to the corners of Medellin normally reserved for locals only, the places where they live day to day and the "paisa" identity is formed. If you are interested in how the youth of Medellin are living, how they are developing and where they are hanging out, she can also be of particular assistance. Alternatively, those interested in learning more about the ground level dynamics of the Conflict, past and present, would be well served to discuss the issue with Maria Elena as she has been involved for some years now in the grassroots level organizing of the city's most desperate neighborhoods. Of course, if you are also just wanting to know where the generally most interesting locations are or the best restaurants or clubs, she can be of use to that extent as well. Her schedule is flexible and her rates affordable. Feel free to contact her via email or cell to discuss your interests and what opportunities are available. Spanish language only please (although she is trying to learn English!).

august says on Sep 16, 2007, 00:33: Fair enough, I take both of your points. I guess I wasn't expecting this to appeal to the timid, novice traveller/gringo, but more to the crowd I would expect to find on PBH - the folks who are excited about digging a little bit deeper into a culture and would know that it's helpful to learn the local language of wherever one is traveling. That said, if people are caught up on the Spanish thing, we could make bilingual arrangements if they happen between the end of December and the end of January.

morphus says on Sep 16, 2007, 08:12: LOL...Ugly American on vacation. Americans don't care about culture. Its our job to destroy other cultures by making everybody speak English and open up Mcdonald's restaurants all over the world.

static says on Sep 16, 2007, 12:18: Please don't further the stereotype of "The Ugly American", because for the most part, that image is incorrect nowadays. While we do, in fact, send out our largest, loudest people abroad just to annoy PBH Forum members, we are not the worst.

august says on Sep 16, 2007, 20:28: Ha! Static, true enough. One need look no further than the roving band of cockney-accented bachelor party-ites dressed up as enormous wangs who flood Amsterdam's Red Light District regardless of the season. That said, I do love my British friends dearly.
