I just spoke with my novio in Cali. He read an article in the paper saying as of last week foreigners need a special visa (or something...) to get married in Colombia. I did not understand very well. I have been searching but can't find/understand about this new visa. (My Spanish is ok for some things, but this is to technical for me). He specifically said it changed (again) last week.
Does anyone know about this? I have been trying to call the Colombian embassy in Chicago with no response. At this rate I will never be a bride!!

Dan says on Aug 23, 2005, 08:58: I really hope everything works out for you sydneygirl... It took me about three times to make sure I had the papers I needed in the correct formatting and all that. (mostly because the birth certificate itself wasn't apostilled and I didn't know at the time how). Be patient and it will all work out for you. God Bless America! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Zedd says on Aug 23, 2005, 09:07: Don't know about anything new since I don't keep up on that stuff anymore. I've been married for 5 years. My wife and I were legally married in Colombia. Back then I had to get a fiancee' visa to do that. (I'm assuming you knew that though, right?) I didn't want to deal with the whole marriage paperwork thing. We got married in Colombia because lawyers are a heck of a lot cheaper there. In 2000 I paid $400 to have him handle everything. The U.S. guy wanted $1500. After that we took care of the post marriage U.S. paperwork (residency & citizenship) ourselves.

Gator says on Aug 23, 2005, 09:35: I Called the Notary... we use in Bogotá and she was unaware of any change to Decree 4000 which became effective February 1, 2005. She advises no specific "special" visa is required for marriage. "Credidi pretio parvo emere et magno vendere tibi in animo fuisse!" . 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

2retirensa says on Aug 23, 2005, 10:13: Oh Gator! I hope you are correct!! I tend to beleive you since you called a local notoria. I'm proceeding with paperwork as planned and hopefully can get through to the consulate- it's been about 3 1/2 hours and still can't get through to them. I hope my novio sends me something in writing that I can post and get a better translation.

2retirensa says on Aug 23, 2005, 13:22: Miguel The article was in the Cali newspaper, and he was reading it to me this morning, but I couldn't understand a lot of it. I'll call and ask him which paper etc, or get him to type it out and send it to me (that probably won't happen- he's not the best typist!. Good idea, thanks

Gator says on Aug 28, 2005, 07:21: Not Only That.... but the rules may vary somewhat from departmento(state) to departmento or even by city-ALWAYS CHECK AHEAD OF TIME FOR REQUIREMENTS AND PAPERWORK! "Credidi pretio parvo emere et magno vendere tibi in animo fuisse!" . 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

BAQ says on Aug 28, 2005, 12:24: Sydneygirl Honey, RUN don;t walk to the Notary and get married NOW, I don't know if the laws have changed but if they have, chances are it will take a few days for the news to trickle down to all the notaries. Semper Fidelis ! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

Hell, yeah. Disclaimer: any comment I make is inane and is not to be taken seriously, and is so patently ridiculous that no one should take it seriously, even as an insult. 0 funny, 0 helpful. |

BAQ says on Aug 28, 2005, 17:47: WOW yea, no kidding, my wife and I have yet to have a church wedding. Since I was divorced and am not Catholic, they (Church) wanted all sorts of paperwork, classes ect. I said the hell with it. Semper Fidelis ! 0 funny, 0 helpful. |
