Latina Households- 7 people to a household

Latins , Colombians all stay in the same house even into their 40s, they band together to survive, 7 people each making $9 an hour, gives them the same income as an $63 an hour executive. This is how they get by so well, even if one or two quit or lose their jobs (which they do quite frequently), it has little effect on the household, as opposed to the executive quitting his job.

Necessity Poor people all over the world employ this strategy. This is very Europen for families to band together and support each other. In the US with big salaries and "Keeping up with the Jonses" this way of thinking is gone and most US households find two working parents supporting 2 SUVs, a pool, the bigger and bestest house, and Nanies and daycare for the kids the parents hardly get to spend time with. A good deal of these people (my friends) are living beyond their means, have debt up the wazoo and are on Anti Depressants.

At first, Greg I thought your post was just ho hum "old news" that everyone here knows. But when you contrast this "3rd world" way of thinking to the majority of households in the US, it's not so third world.

For instance, using your scenario, a really, really, really good family I'm close to owns a 3 level structure that contains 3 seperate apartments. Out of the 7 adults and 7 children that share these apartments the ones that don't have a job at the time do laundry, food shopping, cleaning and whatnot. When the rest of the "Household" gets back from work food is shared, everyone eats together and the person who cooked did so for everyone. The money is pooled, everyone chips in, everyone is happy and things are for this family (and millions of others in Colombia) as they were for the European Immigrants who landed in the US ever since landing in the US was fashionable.

My Father and his 8 brothers and sisters and spouses lived this way in the US, being that my grandparents were off the boat Italian immigrants. It's a fact other immigrants of all origins and poor people did the same and still do. Necessity.

Here in N.Miami they have occupancy Laws Per sq. Foot and the Zoning guys come around all the time to enforce the laws. Is it Fair for a Single family Dwelling(for 4-5 people)to have 6-10 people staying in it and not paying their fair share for Water(if on a flat rate), Sewage and Garbage, school and police, fire services ect ?? A Mexican family across the street from me subleased their extra floor space and had like 4 single boarders staying at night yet they were charged single family Tax rates. At night thier yard looked like a used car lot! LOL Someone reported them and the Boarders had to leave,,,

That's quite the generalization there...

1. You "get" that big salary by adding value to the marketplace. We can choose to increase that value by acquiring advanced degrees, increased work experience, risk taking (via business building), savings and investments or most often and combination of all.

2. You don't "get" that salary because you have NOT added enough value to the marketplace.

The bottom line, it's up to each one of us to create as much value to others in order to create demand for your skills, talents, and anything you might have to offer. But those big salaries just are NOT given, they are earned.

A fool will live beyond their means. Still, it's their own damn fault, not the systems' fault.

"Out of the 7 adults and 7 children that share these apartments the ones that don't have a job at the time do laundry, food shopping, cleaning and whatnot. When the rest of the "Household" gets back from work food is shared, everyone eats together and the person who cooked did so for everyone. "

Unless there are medical reasons for the "ones" who do not have a job, then I'd have to say it's nobody's fault but their own to have not attracted a business to employ them, or for not doing anything about it.

I suppose I like the way it works in latin america better than say Europe...at least they stick to their families and try and make it work for reasons that although revolve around money have a little of an emotional bond to it. I dont see that in europe, its just house shares of people who hook up on the net, know nothing about the other...and just living together, sharing the intimacy of a home because thats the only way both parts can afford it. That's very very depressing, I hope I never find myself having to do that, i love my privacy and if I am to share it then it better be with someone within my own family.

Tinto - I do not think that it is a news flash for you that in the US primary edcuation is supposed to be free and it is the law. Financed mostly by property taxes regardless if the children's a parents pay rent or own the home. On that note. most black americans do not own property, so does that mean their children are not entitled to the same educational standards? I think the overall problem is that people that cannot decently provide for their children are having multiple children. On another note I agree that Latinos have too many damn children and the more religious they are the more freakin kids they have. Perhaps religion's advice on sex edcuation is not working? you think?

Smile if you are a thinker!

stays in the same house, a paper house, they got tired of the city life and built a paper house in El Choco.

Talking about privacy
