Some people (like me) go to places like Colombia 1)because it's 'new' and different 2) because few other tourists go there, so you get treated extremely well by almost everybody 3)because it's a warmer culture and climate than back home 4) to learn a new language 5) to experience and see things you can't see anywhere else 6) because it's very cheap 7) for the great nightlife (music, dance, restaurants, clubs)

While you are doing these things you make more friends in 4 days than you do in 4 years back home (in Canada). Restaurant and hotel staff treat you like you are a rock star, not a bad feeling.

The icing on the cake is that some of these new friends are remarkably beautiful women who wouldn't give you the time of day back home.

So I can go to Paris, Prague or Rome and see some great sights, museums, restaurants etc, maybe make a few new friends, do the same thing 100 million other people do year after year.

Or I can go back to Colombia and be guaranteed to meet some really interesting people who, 15 minutes after meeting, invite me to their home for dinner or to their finca for a weekend.

Maybe it turns out their family is rich and the apartment you are having dinner in is nicer than anything you have ever seen before, museum quality art on the walls, antique furniture that has a long family history that they take pride in telling you about.

You sit down to dinner and of course the food is exquisite and different than anything you have had before. You are the guest of honour despite the fact they have known you for all of 30 minutes.

Maybe the dad looks like a retired silver haired hollywood star and he speaks perfect english and he engages you in a conversation about everything from how he flies fresh flowers all over the world (and how so many of them get destroyed by customs agents searching for drugs), to philosophy to politics to art.

You think he really is a flower exporter, but you don't know for sure, and you wonder.

All the while his gorgeous daughter shoots you furtive looks and leans really, really close when she whispers something in your ear.

That's just a brief example of what can happen in a quiet night in Bogota. Multiply that by the number of days of your stay...

What I don't understand is why anyone would go anywhere BUT Colombia.

The last time I went, I was with my wife and she says, it is very obvious that the girls hanging out with gringos are just for the money. In the Colombian telenovelas you see men which are playing the main rol mostly aren't colombians. It's quit dificult to find good looking guys in Colombia. But of course there always a couple of exceptions.

Dolfi, it's like that here in Sweden too. The Latin Americans with some black mix tend to be more successful with women because they don't look Turkish or Arab. While in Colombia the Arab blood is considered desirable here it's frowned upon...but more in guys than girls.

They posess the same physical qualities as the women there do. That you, as a foregn male don't see it, I can understand, because that pulls the rug right from under your feet. The great majority of Colombian women would prefer to date and marry a Colombian man than a foreigner. It's just most foregn men never get a chance to meet these girls that are not either your traditional party girls (prepagos, grillas whatever) or women that have registered in the marriage agencies or dating sites because they have little chance of finding a Colombian husband either because they have children from a previous relationship (Colombian men are not that crazy about raising up somebody else's kids) or don't posess the qualities that Colombian men are looking for in their potential mates.

Back to the original question:

Would it be an asset to be a Latino in USA? I don't think it makes much difference; it's the individual qualities that decide. In places like Scandinavia it would cause at least a little curiosity among women if you had exotic features, especially in small towns and out in the country where they haven't seen so many of that sort.

I almost married a czech girl. Might as well offend the other 50% of colombians by saying she made colombianas look, well let's say 'highly average' in comparison.

She spoke 6 languages (4 fluently), had a graduate degree, looked like a model, could ski like a pro, liked camping better than nice hotels and her biggest complaint about me was that I spent too much money and was materialistic. Only fault was she was a communist, but I think we could have got over that. We had some great arguments over it.

Make up sex is the best though, isn´t it?

Podborsky i have been in the czech Republic and yep the girls there are very clever and stunningly beautiful.they seem to speak all those language because as you said who wants to learn czech hehe

I can ski and skate too!!! i am not a pro in skiin but i manage, and i do camping too I went around Europe with my husband and we camp most of the time.I tell you at the end of the holidays i could put that tent up in world record :)

Many europeans act quite superior due to their bi or tri lingualism, but it's a function of history, geography and culture. Why on earth would a small town canuck or colombian need to learn russian and german?

Things would be different if we were surrounded by people speaking different languages, and really different if we were occupied for decades by these people like the czechs were.

But it is true they are much better educated in terms of literature and music as well. Czechs of all ages appreciate the whole spectrum of music from pop to jazz to classical. Not too many young americans know anything about classical music.

Both of our countries are very young, so of course we don't have our own mozarts and dvoraks (yet) or thousand year old buildings.

That's just reality, you can't fault a country or culture for being young, but lots of people do.

Since this was brought up, and I'm bored, I'll bite. I read the first reply by Kat and others insisting that it's the money that attracts Colombian women. People here buy into such stereotypes and it's difficult reasoning otherwise. But my experience has been the opposite. I was never more poor than when I dated the fine ladies here, and they haven't sought money. While on balance they appreciate status and comforts as much as the next woman. These women would be happier staying close to family, keeping their good jobs, and my coming here to work something prosperous. Now I have the better job so my fiancé will come here (USA), and maybe return to Colombia if things work out with our plans. It's great chemistry that attracts us all, (imo).
