Believe Colombia will issue an apology to the Ecuadorian government out of kindness and to maintain relations, but the 2 governments had been in direct dialog prior to the engagement. Now what may or may not have been said I do not know, but on Telesur last evening the Ecuadorian president did say live that they were direct talks with Colombia before the raid. Quite possibly Colombia may have left out some major details possibly knowing they would be rejected...I do not know, something does not add up. Just don't believe Ecuador would be as 2 faced (Saying one thing then turning around and do the opposite), as Chevez.

you leftys crack me up, i dont know if i should laugh at your comments or argue with them. i think i will just laugh and drop it because i have so many times in the past tried to talk common sense to liberals and they just dont seem to get it so i will try to explain it in as short a post as i possibly can.

the facts are the facts, liberals are the big whiners and cry babies of all time, they bitch and moan and groan and blame everything in the world that happens on Bush, America, Fox news or christains.
if liberals would just stop crying for 10 minutes and look at the facts they would see the light.

examples:
1. you constantly cry about FOX news, YET consistantly FOX news wins all the highest ratings, they are the leader of ALL news channels, which tells you what? it tells you that even though the libs cry the loudest the over whelming majority of americans watch FOX, which makes you cry babies the minority in judging a good news broadcast.
2. you constantly bitch and moan and blame Bush for every little thing, you call him stupid and hitler and whatever other inmature dumbass things you can come up with, yet consistantly YOUR people the DEMS in congress vote for Bushs programs and new laws. You state how unpopular Bush is with only a 32% favorable rating, yet the Democrat congress only gets a 16% favorable rating, which tells you what? that no matter how dumb Bush may be or how unpopular he may be the Democratic congress is even WORSE.
3. you keep claiming Bush stole the 2000 election, yet he also won the 2004 election so that tells you what? that again either Bush is a very smart guy to steal one or even two elections or the Dems are very stupid to let him steal two elections, which is it is Bush smart or are the Dems dumb, you cant have it both ways.
4. you blame Bush for attacking Iraq, yet most of the Dems voted for it. so once again i ask you is Bush just so damn smart that he fooled all those Dems into signing on for a war, or are the Dems just dumb, again you cant have it both ways.
5. i suppose i could go on and on about america and christains and global warming and all that other stuff that cry baby liberals keep bitching about, but i think i made my point, so there is no need for me to continue .
my point is simple, stop whinning, stop blaming, stop being cry babies, stop pointing fingers, try to help fix the problems rather than constantly blame some one else.sheeesh!!!

RJ, my belief is that they are trying to present an unbiased reporting of world events, which includes direct testimony from the so-called terrorists. You are absolutely right Romy, I wonder if people who have bashed Al-Jezeera really have read any pararaphs on their news reporting, as you said they report news from all over the world, showing what really goes on, their reporters are all well respected and serious, the best ones have left other networks to work for Al-J and they are really the best. As far as documentaries, they are excellent as well, furthermore, they do not have anything to do with terrorists at all...like I said before, that is just pure sheer ignorance, words spoken by someone who never, never has read or seen Al-J.

Here in Miami, I rely very little on the Miami/Nuevo Herald for a True Representation of the Cuban/Venezuelan News as they completely Right Wing(ultra) so I also check out Cuba's Granma&BBC for a second Balanced source. I also listen to Alternative News stations on my Shortwave and here you get some great Unfiltered news bits. Some of the Neuvo Herald's Writer's are also involved with VOA Broadcasts from the States to Cuba so no independent opinion put out from them. Just a Rubberstamp of the Bush Adm and Cuban Right Wing groups here in Miami. Its hard to get unbiased news in our area only by local sources, print, cable and broadcast these days. BTW, The German radio station Deutsche Welle on Shortwave also has great unbiased newscasts,,,

I am no fan of the mid east mentality, as anybody who has read my posts knows. I think the teachings of the Islamic religion are indescribably ugly and have no place in a secular society.

Having said that, I am inclined to agree with the favorable comments on Al Jazeera that I have seen in this thread. Al Jazeera gives a wide open forum to lots of points of view, including those of former muslims (Wafa Sultan), and those secularists who speak out against the ugly intolerance of the mid east theocracies.

Maybe Wafa Sultan has been on CNN, but I don't recall ever seeing her on CNN. I have seen her on Fox News. That courageous lady receives death threats for her apostasy every day.

Al Jazeera has given her a forum to openly express her views to Arabic speakers.

Anybody can find Wafa Sultan's interview on Al Jazeera on Youtube. She is one gutsy lady.

Sorry, but the fact that some companies are excited about it does not make it good for the general Colombian economy. Local companies will have a hard time competing against US companies intent on flooding the Colombian market. It will certainly benefit some sectors, but overall I believe that it will lead to long-term job losses and will generally be bad for a large amount of Colombian companies.

Take Velez for example. They are a Colombian leather goods manufacturer that does very well in the Colombian domestic market. What happens when cheap American leather goods flood the market? Velez will start losing domestic market share. I find it hard to believe that they would be able to offset these losses with exports to the US. Who is going to buy Velez products in the US? I realize that this is a very specific example, but it is a scenario that will play out in many different Colombian industries and will end in the loss of many Colombian companies and the jobs they currently provide in Colombia.

There are also some intellectual property issues that are detrimental to Colombian interests. The most egregious are those that benefit US pharmaceutical companies. The FTA would effectively ban generic versions of US drugs for 20 years. This would greatly harm the average Colombian while unfairly benefiting the US Pharmas. Isn't it enough that they are screwing the average American?

ColombianoGringo, a Colombian friend of mine has setup a leather boutique (similar to a boots n' bags in Colombia) here in Calgary AB and is doing very well for herself.

That is great for her, but that doesn't address the bigger issue. Is she selling exclusively Colombian goods?

I am always glad to hear about entrepreneurs such as your friend. Does Canada have a free trade agreement with Colombia?

Tom.............every company will rise to the occasion................or someone else will take their place..............their methodolgy for doing business here, is the way it is, because they can get away with it.......................no pressure..................easy going..............once they start aqquiring US customers they will adapt very quickly to the ways of that customer...............it always happens...........people and companies rise to the next level.....................

The Chinese are a good example............from being very unprofessional and slow to react to the needs of customers......to being really on the ball.........

Companies in Brazil used to be a joke.............everything was " tomorrow ".......extremly easy going........very unresponsive to a customers needs............Now they are a huge force to be reckoned with in International Trade and Brazil is a huge export economy...........

Colombian companies are so un-export focused................as a nation this country exports very little ....................the goverment agencies and educational institutions here are only now beginning to step up to the plate................give them a few years combined with this particular TA with the States..............their attitudes will be totally different..........................

Raay, Your scenario depends on a lot of questionable assumptions about the ability of relatively small Colombian companies to compete against large, well-funded multinationals.

I am not against Colombia being a great exporter, nor am I completely against some sort of trade agreement, but this one is not the correct one. It needs to be renegotiated.

Tom............

.." Local companies will have a hard time competing against US companies intent on flooding the Colombian market."

As it is, US companies do a huge amount of business here already..........Colombia is consistantly in the top 15 countries in the world that the US exports to..........there really is not a lot of room for huge improvment......................

But ,on the other hand, apart from the big commodities, Colombia really exports very little to the States......

"there really is not a lot of room for huge improvment"

Then why is the Republican administration pushing for this so hard? They are not going to do something that will increase the export trade imbalance.

Despite our difference of opinion on the general topic, you have to admit that the ridiculous concessions to US pharmas alone merits a renegotiation.

The more time passes, the more I think Colombia should have thought things through a lot more...including the revelations, if that they indeed are, from the PCs...there could have been smarter ways to deal with this and, for that matter, waiting and tracking Reyes to another camp in the first place.

If you want to put it that way...I think we'll only completely know if that risk was worth it after several weeks or so, in the short term, and at least after several years, in the medium term.

Too much crap is going on right now and, I have to say, I'm beginning to be overwhelmed while trying to track everything at the same time...guess I'm a victim of my own inventions, in a way.

But, I frankly don't know how can Uribe be patient enough to not show some muscles, too.
He is acting like a great President.
There's no words to express the anger I feel looking at the news coming out hour after hours. So clear the connections between Venezuela, Ecuador and FARC, so clear the will of the Venezuelan Duce to go to war.

And still, Colombia is patiently waiting... and the only country who stand for this country is the US.

And my country, Italy, and its Foreign Minister, condemning the raid and nothing more. Fuck off Italy! I hope our useless embassy will burn under the bombs of the guerrilla.

my personal opinon is that Colombia could kick Venezuela and Ecuadors asses at the same time, however, im sure the US could and would offer some assistance, maybe a carrier and a few stelth jets, some satelite information would be nice.

Simon i'd like to sign up with you man but cancer set me back and im not suited for war anymore, i would like to do something to help Colombia if a war breaks out. I will think of something i can do, some way i can support Colombia.
