Larges packages (por Navidad)

What has been everyone's experience with sending large packages from the U.S. (say 30 - 50 lbs). I'm looking to possibly ship a computer. Costs? Best carrier to use?

I've had good luck with FedEx but they're charging $100+ for much lighter/smaller packages so I can only imagine what they would want to charge for this. Also, would it be advisable to conceal the nature of the retail carton from common observation (eg. wrap in brown paper so no brand names are showing?)

Ship the money!!! Computers are about the same cost in Colombia and if there are problems it will have a local warranty.

I'm carrying a rather large package to Cali to give to my Novia for Navidad,
but I don't think the Airlines have the right to charge extra for it.

Albatross...the airlines are very clear on their luggage and package regulations. AND they often have different (more restrictive) regulations for during the holidays.

I just shipped a 14x14x14 box to my husband in Bucaramanga and spent $41 for 5lbs 3.6 oz and this was through the US Post office.... They say 8-10 business days.....

Personally do not know about individual shipping companies in Colombia (Feel much better in costs and easement), this has to be much cheaper than the local UPS/DHL/Fed X etc.
Went to ship via specialty svs. as listed above for a computer for my wife's son, but this $$ was totally outragous. Wife flew this there as personal baggage and had on her person the invoice for the computer so customs was very good, during holiday travel may be much different as suggested above. Customs may also charge additional on top of another delivery charge with Fed Ex etc.
Last July, wife left Europe to fly out on Iberia, # 2 bag over weight by 9 to 11 lbs, Iberia was trying to charge her a robbery price tag of € 20 per kilo of overweight. We were willing to pay, but not this rip off price. Also too was the carry on, she had her purse and one tourist hand bag, this too they would not allow, 1 or the other but not both. Needless to say, I packaged well these in a large box (Was a large suitcase), and sent via private shipper through Rome, then was added as flight freight to Bogota/Pereira, price was € 76 euro total.

You can buy the computer online through DELL.com and get it shipped to Colombia.
USPS sucks, last year I sent Christmas gifts and they arrived in February!!! They say 4 weeks? Not true!! It took them 3 months (12 weeks).
What I did was contacting the Colombians in my city, they new a lady who has a delivery service, big cities like New York or Miami have several!! She charged me $3 dollars per pound (I know in NYC is $1.99 x pound) and the package arrived 1 week after I sent it!!!
I'll definitely use it again!!! I know there is a different charge for LCD TVs but there's still the possibility.
To find out more look at the Colombian embassy/consulate webpage in your city or go to the closest Colombian restaurant/store.

We sent Christmas presents to my husband's family a couple of weeks ago, the box was 14x14x14 and it weighed like 12 lbs., the cost was $42 and they received it in 10 days. Not bad. We had clothing, DVDs, CDs, a few things for their kitchen and I wrote on the description that it was all used stuff with letters and Christmas cards.

deathnova says on Dec 11, 2007, 09:57:

I mailed a letter through the USPS and it took 30 days to be delivered. Also, computers are not cheap, be it laptop or desktops.

I sent a 5 pound parcel to Brazil from the
states at the slowest speed it was 25
bucks. For seven day service it would
be 49 bucks. It has been 3 weeks and it
still hasn't arrived. Hopefully it will arrive
by Christmas. My point...the US post office is slow and expensive.
An option might be to send it by BOAT.
I sent a 50 lb parcel the size of a computer
Box from New York to Toronto. It took
six weeks but it was about 39$. That was
6 years ago. That was through the US
post office. Apparently the routing takes
it all over with no real garantee of how
Long it takes...it could take 2 months.

I live in the 'burbs in Jersey, and there is a HUUUUUUUUUGGGGEEEEEE Colombian community here, so sending packages cheap to Colombia is not a problem. I sent a desktop computer 3 weeks ago to Medellin, and it cost $like $80.00, but it arrived in a matter of a week. No problems whatsoever with customs, and for the time it takes to get there, 80 bucks is a bargain!

kikolina0920 says on Dec 11, 2007, 19:31:

I forgot to mention; the cost per pound to send something to Colombia is around 1.69, but because of the holidays, there is a special of 1.25/lb. I sent a 22 lb. box on Sunday, and it cost $31.00! It will arrive in Medellin on Thursday, December 20th, right on time for Christmas! (8 working days)
