La musica de una Colombiana

Monpirri is convinced that my wife is not a real Colombian even though I suspect that she is. I was looking at her collection of CDs that she insists on hauling around in her car and playing constantly and wondering if any of it was any good or was most of it plain old crap. There are certain names I recognize of course but much of it is pretty obscure to me, el gringo. She really seems to like compendiums of various artists much more than CDs by one artist. So, in the interest of learning what the hell she is listening to, here goes:

Los Hermanos Zuleta En Parranda Vol. 1
Vicente Fernandez 22 Super Exitos
Nicola Di Bari Serie Platino 20 Exitos
Rudy Marquez Lo Mejor
Juan Eduardo y Juan Marcelo 20 Exitos

That confirms it your wife is definitely living in the Middle Ages hahahahahaha
having said that she has lots of good stuff in there, although I personally wish somebody would shove Roberto Carlos's wooden leg down his throat and shut his ass up once and for all. PLEASE tell her I told you to tell her this :))

She has a lot of ballads in there and what they call 'musica de protesta', that seems to be her main drawing card.

Surprising to see an intellectual communist in there... Sueño, sueño, con serpientes... :-)

In 2003, Cuban communist Silvio Rodriguez was elected to the National Assembly of People's Power, the Cuban parliament, and is regarded as one of the most influential intellectuals in present-day Cuba.

Many Latin American singers go on to careers in politics. Johny Ventura now sits in the Dominican Congress. Gilberto Gil is now Minister of Culture for Brazil.

Yes, Rubi, I know that singers become politicians... My surprise is that Mrs. UTC would have a communist artist in her music collection.

UC I like a lot of the music she listens to...from Juanes to porros to vallenato and cumbia.

I have a question for you guys. Why hasn't bachata become popular in Colombia? Everytime I play bachata for my Colombian friends and then show them how to dance to it, they love it.

Silvio Rodgriguez is a pretty popular artist in that style of music, hardcore communism and whatnot notwithstanding. People request him a lot on my gigs when I'm playing that kind of music.

adrimm, Mrs. Plátano listens to Piero. Did you know Piero was born in Italy and started his musical career singing in Italian?

adrimm, I love piero Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanes too...utopia, your wife's collection of music is fairly representative in her age group. The friend I'm staying at here in Cali has a lot of the same music but perhaps a little more typical Colombian, bambucos, porros, guabinas. She also plays the guitar and sings; has a wonderful voice.

Cheers,
Desi

(Monpirri, I haven't been able to find "Romance de la Cañada" or the collection "Bellezas de mi Llano" in any music store at Cosmocentro or Unicentro. They only have the collection called "Tributo al Llano", which I already have.)

yes platano, I remember somewhere once upon a time reading this about Piero.. couldn't have told you where from, but I knew that he wasn't/isn't Colombian-born.

But every Colombian who listened to music in the 70s would know who he is.

So Desi & Platano, dare I post the lyrics to "Los Americanos", would pbh find them amusing or not? Hmmmm..

En espanol Ellos nacen ancianos
y van enniñeciendo
a través de la vida,
los americanos;

y nacen convencidos
que hay nadie en el mundo
que sea más importante
que los americanos.

Napoleón, para ellos,
fue un señor italiano
que organizó "la cosa"
sin americanos;

y están más que seguros
que no hubiera perdido
Waterloo con la ayuda
de los americanos.

Si conocen historia,
no es por haber leído,
sino de haberla visto
en el cine americano;

con grandes escenarios
y música grandiosa
en el sutil estilo
de los americanos.

De mandíbulas grandes
de tanto mascar chicles
es muy común el verlos
a los americanos;

luciendo mil colores,
todos menos el negro,
al que no consideran
del gusto americano.

Cuando son mayorcitos
se visten de turistas
y se van por el mundo,
los americanos;

en viaje organizado,
con romance incluído,
a la larga pagado,
por los americanos;

con típicos atuendos
se mezclan con la gente
y nadie se da cuenta
que son americanos.

Y además siempre compran
valiosas cosas viejas
recién envejecidas
para americanos;

y después en sus casas,
reciben amistades
que alaban el buen gusto
de los americanos.

Y en los clubes nocturnos,
después de algunas copas,
se sienten inspirados los americanos;

y es muy común hallarlos
bailando sin descanso,
derrochando la gracia
de los americanos.

Y bien amigos míos,
ya basta por ahora,
les dije lo que pude
de los americanos;

y si los ven...
si los ven les dan mis respetuosos saludos
a los americanos.

Utopiacowboy I do not remember talking to you about Colombian music here on PBH or anywhere else.

What I have said about you, now that you mentioned, or perhaps about your wife, if she edits or is aware of your posts here, is that there is a clear sense of unfamiliarity with many things about Colombia!
You and Gomezman5 have the very same pattern -- both stand up for another country too many times here on PBH, and from your point of view, Colombia takes the second place or the last in several threads. Both use the other very same country as a role model or as a point of reference as the country that needs to be followed by Colombia, and we are not talking about the US.

Both 100% of the time when addressing a topic about Colombia, you guys come across talking from a point of view from the city where you guys live or the city in which you guys have fallen in love: Chicago and San Antonio.

Gomezman5 and you lack great deal of knowledge about Colombia, and that is why I recommended one time to someone else that if one cannot travel very frequently to Colombia because fear of crime, not enough time from work, financial reasons, or whatever reason, then buy a Satellite where you can get the most updated information about Colombia. I know that you said at one time, "Why watch programming from another country when you live in the States?" I agree with you on this 1000% percent, because the programming in English in the states is very good and very versatile! However, some “Hispanics” do not like to watch English channels in the USA. Again I do not know why they have this irrational attitude; if that is the case, I
recommend that you buy and watch a satellite that broadcasts international programming and local American channels as well. (Why watch the same Spanish channels in the states when there are better and more educational programs about Colombia from a Satellite)

The advantage of watching TV from a satellite is that if you like Colombia, of course, and you do not have enough knowledge about Colombia (as in my case I do not have enough knowledge about the country), and if you like to post in a forum that is about Colombia, why not get more familiar with the country!"

P.S. About your music question, you do have some Colombian music in the compiled list.
"Lucho Bermudez/Edmundo Arias/ Porros Cumbias y Gaitas". This is a good example of the many different types of Colombian music. Música del folklor colombiano.

adrimm, Yes, it's a six-month sabbatical, started on January 1 and will end on June 30. I've split the time between Sweden,Finland and Colombia. It's been wonderful being here but until I have my house all fixed up and ready to start the b&b I can't be in Colombia for longer periods at any given time. (I need a place to stay and my house is rented out. Staying with friends works well too, but I wouldn't want to impose on a friendship too much.

Desi
