K&R Insurance

I am planning to head back to Medellin next month, buy an apartment, and settle in for a while. Once I get my permanent resident investor visa I will get a cedula, and then I think I can get health insurance, and it sounds like many car companies sell car insurance.

I was wondering what the PBH crowd thinks of kidnap and randsom insurance. I am certainly not paranoid, but if a K&R policy is not wildly expensive and gives me a little peace of mind, it might be a good idea. I am not planning to roll around like a playboy, but any gringo with a condo and a car is probably a target. I don't want to worry that my family will have to deal with the situation if I am unlucky, and I don't want to have to hand over a fortune unnecessarily.

Any thoughts? Anyone have experience with these policies?

Thanks

What if someone from the company rats you out? Then the bad guys KNOW it's worth while to grab you.??

I am a Gringo and the wife and I have a condo and a car and never worry about the kidnapping and that's after a lot of years in Colombia Cali, short time Cartagena and now Bogotá. With what you have described there are bigger fish to fry.

If you are that worried try Costa Rica or if the latin influence is what you want Miami-Dade County will do just fine.

K&R is not cheap. If you are that worried you need to pick a different country. Personally I know a lot of guys with guns in Colombia and I would still prefer Chile or Uruguay.

This article is a couple of years old, but it's mostly about people being kidnapped in Medellin. I didn't know that K&R insurance is illegal for Colombian insurance companies to sell.

Yep, this would be the main problem I'd have with insurance.

Yes, it might be illegal to have this type of insurance. My guess is the policy might be available for employees of large corporations and paid by the corporation. Maybe ex-Chiquita banana company officials?

Not many kidnappings of foreign nationals lately. There was someone in Armenia that was kidnapped a month ago but the captors were quickly apprehended and the man released. Not politics, just the run of the mill ignorant bunch out for a quick buck.

I think I read here on PBH that some Swedish retired guy was kidnapped. The family accused the FARC (or paracos). It quickly came to light his spouses family was involved. Funny, but something to think about if you want to avoid trouble. Maybe someone can verify.

I don’t think I’d want to be married and have life insurance. Nope,, if your wife is trustworthy,, maybe,, but do you know all the relatives? What if Jorge needs a new pair of sneakers and knows his aunt will have no problem geting him some when she collects the insurance?

A few months ago FARC released information that,, what? 15 or so political “prisoners? had been killed. Some had been in captivity for years.

Then FARC released their "last notes" to the families. They have yet to release the bodies (I think). Great bunch the FARC, your basic socialist, communist, drug trafficking extortionists but well loved by some.

Oh,, Hugo Chavez was going to get the bodies released,, Does this tell you something?

Thanks everyone for your feedback. I am comfortable with the risk-level in Medellin. I just wanted to ask if K&R insurance was common or recommended. It sounds like the major cost is not worth the minimal benefit.

Ironically, just last year a crazy homeless guy attacked me when I was walking down a main street in San Francisco during the day! My main concern in Colombia seems to be getting talked to death by friendly locals.

This is quite common is some areas. Seems that sniffing glue, smoking pot and subsequently getting a whiff of fatulence from the cloth seat of a Toyota has a similar effect.

Maybe he had sleeping face down in a Toyota? I wondor if Hilux uses the same cloth in Colombia?

I know a guy that used to be the CEO of the company that runs the Port of New Orleans. He said back in the 90s when he had to go to Colombia on business (Bogota), his company actually required him to have kidnapping insurance. I am sure they paid for it though. He said upon arrival, he was escorted by several soldiers anywhere he went. I short trip in a car was like a miltary / police caravan, with half a dozen other cars or trucks filled with soldiers in front of and behind his vehicle.
