Kidnapping in Colombia

I was reading this article in Portafolio about the reduction of kidnapping in Colombia, and the huge increase in other countries. It quoted a study of the NGO PAx Christi, which is not friendly with Uribe.

The report of Pax Christi can be found here:

http://www.ikvpaxchristi.nl/files/Documenten/LA%20Colombia/English%20C...

The ranking is on page 5

And the top ten ranking is:

1. Mexico
2. Iraq
3. India
4. South Africa
5. Brazil
6. Pakistan
7. Ecuador
8. Venezuela
9. Colombia
10. Bangladesh
11. Nigeria
12. Haiti
13. Afghanistan

And the ranking of kidnappings per capita is:

1. Iraq
2. Mexico
3. The Chechen Republic
4. Ecuador
5. Brazil
6. Haiti
7. South Africa
8. Trinidad & Tobago
9. Venezuela
10. Colombia
11. India

Hilarious! =D

I also read yesterday that Mexico's military troops are losing the war against their strong cartel's. Those Mexican mafia guys ain't joking and should be feared.

The military is ineffective and corrupt. The cartels are well financed and utterly determined.

The government doesn't stand a chance. It's a very sad state of affairs.

I know, the mafia is running the country just like in Colombia back in the 80s and 90s. Calderón doesn't have enough cojones to match Uribe's that's for sure.

this warfare in mexico is a huge sign of the corruption from the president on down which prevents doing anything about it. everyone's on the payroll or in line for the profits...calderon not withstanding.

when you're talking near a hundred billion dollars annually, pretty soon you're taliking serious money and that's enough to corrupt just about anyone.

like viajero, i'm glad this chaos migrated out of colombia and is now in mexico. not to say i'm glad for the problems it creats for the mexicans, but better there than in colombia.

i agree with you diana. calderon is a pretty faced huevon on the take. no different than all his predecessors. just follow the money trail. they rape and plunder the country while in power and then pass it on to their personally groomed successors.

You know, Calderón reminds a lot of Pastrana. Very easy going, friendly, soft spoken, well put together, but it comes down to it, totally worthless. And yes, I wouldn't be surprised if he was somehow linked to the low life traffickers, I mean they didn't blow up the plane one of his politicians was on for nothing last year.

That would be a mistake-Los Mochis is a great place to visit, friendly people great food and lots to see/do.

OK some of the back country is a bit rough but everyone knows where not to go, the narcos beat on each other but not on the general populations-keep your nose clean and you'll be fine.
