Top FARC guerrilla leader surrenders in Colombia
http://www.euronews.net/index.php?article=487793&lng=1&option=1

A prominent commander of the marxist FARC rebels in Colombia has surrendered according to officials in Bogota. Nelly Avila Moreno - known as Karina - had a fearsome reputation as the head of the so-called 47th Front in the country's northwest. The administration put a bounty on her head worth more than half a million euros, accusing her of murder, terrorism, extortion and kidnapping.

The FARC rebels have been fighting to overthrow the government for more than 40 years.
The defence minister said she was virtually dying of hunger when she handed herself in. Karina is reported to have assassinated the father of Colombia's president, Alvaro Uribe, who had made her a key target.

The Colombian military intensified their actions against the guerrillas, but President Uribe guaranteed her safety if she gave herself up.

How does one almost die of hunger in a place like Antioquia, especially when you've got guns and money and it's been your terrain for 20-some years? Was she surrounded by the military and they were waiting her out?

"How does one almost die of hunger in a place like Antioquia.... Was she surrounded by the military and they were waiting her out?"

Surrounded in more ways than one-hounded day and night for months and months just like her old (now dead boss) was.

In the end she didn't have local support or money (as we've learned from Reyes' computer) and machine guns are no match for planes dropping bombs.

Of course there's a propaganda victory here and the Govt wants to play it up but things must have been really bad for a tough character like her to thrown in the towel.

Let's hope she sings loud and long in prison.

' a la orden!'

Who said Uribe could not defeat the Farc terrorists?

Who would have thought they would start surrendering like the French?

Gracias Presidente!

Bravo, Presidente Uribe for the perfect operation!

The first thing she seems to have stated is that she did not kill Uribe's father and that she is not guilty of many of the things of which she's accused. She also stated that she has not had contact with the farc secretariat for two years.

Atrevido says on May 19, 2008, 11:43:

I have heard over and over that because of US listening devices the FARC have not been able to communicate by satalite phones or other methods as they used to and that many cells have been cut off from the secretariate for a long time so her statement to that effect sounds very reasonable.

romy says on May 19, 2008, 11:46:

billyb says on May 19, 2008, 11:52:

Wouldn't you consider it interesting that the the equivalent of a colonel in a regular army has not had any contact with the high command for two years? I mean, the only one above her in the Antioquia region was 'lefty' Rios, before his demise.

romy says on May 19, 2008, 11:58:

not interesting, I don't believe it. FARC communications/coordination must be very advanced for them to have lasted so long. So maybe with recent advancements from the government this has been reduced, but 2 years I don't believe. There must be something else to it. In itself it's not interesting, at least not to me.

Mr. Hollywood says on May 19, 2008, 12:59:

I don't believe that she hadn't talked to Rios in 2 years, and he was part of the Secretariat.

I know for a fact that the FARC have a lot of trouble communicating with each other, for exactly the reasons Atrevido cites, but I think her claim to have not talked to other leadership in 2 years is a pathetic attempt to pretend she doesn't have any actionable intelligence about the other cabecillas. And I don't think she's fooling anyone.

tasco66 says on May 19, 2008, 13:07:

“I don't believe it. FARC communications/coordination must be very advanced for them to have lasted so long."

Yep, it’s so advanced that they were negotiating the release of a hostage that was in Colombian government custody.

Even the Farc “porta voz" Cassini aka Buggy was fooled!

Bravo, Presidente Uribe for the perfect operation!

sanandressi says on May 19, 2008, 13:26:

I think if the FARC did not have Ingrid, 3 gringos and several hundred others that Uribe would send every soldier possible and every helicopter and bomber etc and he would wipe out the FARC every single one of them and why not?

The leftists (Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International etc) hate Uribe but I think he is the best president Colombia has had in the last 4 or 5....maybe ever?

Maybe I shouldn't be surprised, but I still am, at the poor reporting or the poor (military) intelligence pertaining to the FARC. According to various news accounts, she's either in her forties or forty. If the latter, she would have been 15 when she supposedly killed Uribe's father (which she denies). So who's doing a bad job - the reporters, or does the Colombian government lack some of the most basic facts about their own citizens at the top of public enemy No. 1?

Mr. Hollywood says on May 19, 2008, 15:32:

"I have heard over and over that because of US listening devices the FARC have not been able to communicate by satalite phones or other methods as they used to and that many cells have been cut off from the secretariate for a long time "

FARC bought a bunch of Sat phones in Miami-some Panamanian drug dealer set it up-and it turns out all the phones were bugged and a lot of people were busted for dealing coke-they might be in prison in the US by now.

It would be good for a laugh to hear the bullshit/pendejada that ugly junkyard dog spouts to her captors but you can bet they have a file on her 30 cm thick.
